FCCPTA Hosts Reception for Dr Reid, Local Leaders

On Wednesday night, August 17th, PTA leaders from around Fairfax County gathered at Gatehouse Administration Center to meet our new superintendent for Fairfax County Public Schools, Dr. Michelle Reid. The event was spearheaded by Fairfax County Council PTA with over 90 local leaders attending.

In her opening remarks, attendees learned more about Dr Reid's personal background, including is a former collegiate athlete and has four children. Dr. Reid then outlined her vision for FCPS. In particular, she focused on how we are going to bring our community of parents and teachers together to work towards the ultimate goal of educating our youth and preparing them for future careers that are rapidly changing. She shared that one of the issues she is looking at is math education and how we are preparing our kids to be able to study math at a higher level.

Dr. Reid then opened the floor for questions. Leaders from around the county brought up concerns about how to work as a community in our schools, and partnering with principals and teachers. Another brought up concerns his parents had on last year’s policies related to COVID. Dr. Reid seemed open to listening to all concerns and questions, and said she would work to reach out to concerned parents. She expressed a willingness to be available to discuss issues that may arise in the future.

Dr. Reid will also be continuing a tradition that was set by her predecessors to appear at the general meetings for FCCPTA and provide a time for questions and information sharing. If you are a member of your local PTA, then your membership is also in FCCPTA, Virginia PTA, and National PTA.

We welcome you to join us at our first FCCPTA General Membership Meeting of the new school year held virtually on October 6 at 6:30 p.m. Register for the fall meeting here and stay tuned for future in person events with special guests and presentations on our event calendar.
