FCCPTA 2008 School Start Time Survey
"Improvement" Comments Submitted for Question 5A
Comments Submitted by a
Group
of Survey Takers from June 15 to July 7, 2008
10:03 AM Sunday, June 15, 2008
If the volume of homework remains the same, I would keep the current schedule be
cause with after school sports, etc., we spend hours each evening on homework.
Getting out later would mean extending the time spent on homework past 10:00 p.m
. In addition, starting later messes with parents that work and would like to drop off their students in the morning. I thoroughly disagree with the new late
Wed start times at West Potomac. If the teachers need more time to meet, they should do it after school. Making the bus riders sit in the cafeteria for an hou
r is ridiculous.
10:59 AM Sunday, June 15, 2008
Tweek the start time for high school to have latest end time be 3:15 to allow for staying after school, which most of them do for either extra class help, clubs
or sports.
11:01 AM Sunday, June 15, 2008
I would have an extremely hard time getting my elementary school kids prior to 3
:30
11:20 AM Sunday, June 15, 2008
I think middle school start is just a little late. It would leave many getting
to school on their own.
11:37 AM Sunday, June 15, 2008
high schoo should start the latest
02:26 PM Sunday, June 15, 2008
Ideally we'd have enough buses and drivers to have kids going and coming home around the same time. That's not financially feasible, but it would be the best o
f all options.
03:03 PM Sunday, June 15, 2008
I think elementary start start times should all be between 8:30 and 8:55 if possible.
03:40 PM Sunday, June 15, 2008
The middle schools are getting out too late.
04:21 PM Sunday, June 15, 2008
I wouldn't change the middle school schedule as it currently stands. With consideration of homework and after school activities, I think arrival home after 4 f
or either hs or ms would be difficult. I support the changes to the hs and es a
s proposed in 5 above but would like to see the ms stay on the current bell schedule if possible.
08:04 PM Sunday, June 15, 2008
If possible (given bus schedules) have start time be 8-8:30 am
09:24 PM Sunday, June 15, 2008
I would suggest High schools start at 8 AM. If they start too late it makes after school activities difficult, especially for practice after dark, such as track
and cross country.
10:46 PM Sunday, June 15, 2008
No child should be standing waiting for a bus before 6:30 in the morning. The
School leaders can still change their maind about school starting and the kids don;t know about it. I have seen many children going to school ro waiting for buses when the schools have been delayed or canceled.
11:48 PM Sunday, June 15, 2008
middle school to start 8:00
08:13 PM Tuesday, June 24, 2008
middle schools start at 8:00, high schools start at 8 - 8:30
08:57 PM Tuesday, June 24, 2008
How would it work for kids that go to secondary schools? You indicate the start
time for MS and HS. Would that be different for a secondary school? I suspect
for transportation reasons they'd have to start at the same time....but what time what that be the HS or MS time?
10:03 PM Tuesday, June 24, 2008
Middle school needs to start earlier. Children riding buses to middle school will be getting home too late & there would be no time for after school activities.
10:58 PM Tuesday, June 24, 2008
I only agree if my secondary school has high school and middle school on the same time schedule.
11:15 PM Tuesday, June 24, 2008
I think starting at 9:20 am for middle school is too late. I would have them strt at 8:35-8:55 same as the HS. Frost and Woodson start at the same time. Ending
at 4-4:30 pm is too late.
09:19 AM Thursday, June 26, 2008
switch the Middle School and High School times
09:27 AM Thursday, June 26, 2008
In my case I have to wait until 0715 to drop my son off at SACC, if we are going
to change the starting time from students, we also need to change the starting
time for SACC. If the new starting time is going to be 7:50, then i can wait at
home and forego SACC altogether, unless SACC is now going to open its door at 6
:45 or 7:00AM, giving me more time to make my commute.
09:27 AM Thursday, June 26, 2008
7:50 would be too early for an elementary child to start
08:02 AM Monday, June 16, 2008
Find a way to make elementary school start later. And figure out why the many b
uses that pass my house are mostly empty every day.
09:15 AM Monday, June 16, 2008
Junior High starts too late. They need to start the same time as high school
10:07 AM Monday, June 16, 2008
High school start 8:00-8:35 so there is an earlier dismissal to allow for homework time between the end of school and sports practices
11:01 AM Monday, June 16, 2008
I like the later bell schedule for High School in proposal B, but Middle School
should start earlier than 9:30
12:06 PM Monday, June 16, 2008
I would support the change, however, if it could improve, I would say getting middle schoolers home earlier.
12:07 PM Monday, June 16, 2008
High school and middle school should start closer to 8:00 AM
12:24 PM Monday, June 16, 2008
switch middle shcool and high school start times. (high school starts later)
12:31 PM Monday, June 16, 2008
I think the mid school times should be earlier. To end the day at 4/4:30 about 1
/2 hr to an hour too late in the day.
12:56 PM Monday, June 16, 2008
I didn't select "B" but, my work schedule is based on my son's school day; I like dropping him off at the bus stop and getting into my office early to start the
day, avoiding the traffic of driving downtown and the return trip in the afternoon; the start of school sporting events, etc. would be adversely impacted, as w
ell as, future part-time work schedules. I do not support changing the schedule
at all.
01:37 PM Monday, June 16, 2008
High school students are older and should adapt easier to getting up earlier, taking responsibility and getting out early to work an afterschool job and doing homework earlier in the evenings in order to go to bed earlier. High schoolers need to prepare themselves for the working world or, if fortunate, college where some classes start early as well. Little children who are still rapidly developin
g and need more time to adjust should have the greater consideration. I went to
high school at 0720 every morning for 4 years and survived and reprioritized my
lifestyle and schedule and responsibilities to meet these time deadline-weight:normal; lines. High schoolers need to learn to make smarter choices not to given more excuses to not
meet the current standards, in my opinion.
02:02 PM Monday, June 16, 2008
Middle Schools start too late.
02:43 PM Monday, June 16, 2008
have middle school start no later than 9:20.
06:25 PM Monday, June 16, 2008
I don't know what the limitations are resulting from Fairfax County having one o
f the largest bus fleets in the country. I think 7:50am is too early for any student to start. 8:10 to 8:30 would more appropriate. High schools should start
closer to 9am and middle schools closer to 8:30. Elementary school has to fit
in between 8:10 and 9am also. Again, though, I understand transportation truly
creates the limitations in the school schedule.
06:26 PM Monday, June 16, 2008
Have the middle schools start around 9:00.
08:04 PM Monday, June 16, 2008
I believe that all schools should be over and children home close to or by 4:00.
After this time, it severly limits the play time or after school activities that can take place before homework and a family dinner take place. I believe children need some unstructured play/down time after school before they start homework. If school ends too late, they will not give up this time, they will just stay up later into the night to finish homework. This defeats the purpose of starting schools later so children get more sleep. It also limits the time that families get to spend together because children may be off doing homework.
11:52 PM Monday, June 16, 2008
Elementary School 7:40-8:30, High School 8:30-8:50, Middle 9:00. Because of after-school activities, I wouldn't want to see Middle School start later than 9:00
.
12:29 AM Tuesday, June 17, 2008
high schools should start after 8:30 am. (between 8:30 and 9:30 am)
11:20 AM Tuesday, June 17, 2008
Don't like school to end much later than 3:30 p.m. due to after school activitie
s.
11:48 AM Tuesday, June 17, 2008
My kids are young for now, but I think that picking up school kids before 07:00
AM is simply too early for any age. If more resources can't be found to have mo
re buses or bus drivers, then I think the school day should be extended to accom
odate a later morning start time.
11:59 AM Tuesday, June 17, 2008
Middle School starts too late and ends too late with this schedule!
07:41 AM Wednesday, June 18, 2008
I would like to start a little later. Closer to 8. I would not want to start the HS later than 8 because I would still like to see the school day end no later
than 3. I would be happy with the elementary schools starting between 7:50 and
8:55
08:58 PM Wednesday, June 18, 2008
I think that the middle and high schools students being picked up at the bus stop before 6:00 is entirely way to early in my opinion. My daughter will be in 2nd
grade at Floris Elementary next year and her bus comes at 8:15 which is fine for us and that works out well. If the bus came around 7:45, that would not be so
bad either.
10:26 PM Wednesday, June 18, 2008
Working parents need the Elementary kids to school earlier. I have my child in
an afterschool program that supports our needs. (Unrelated side note: I'm very
angry at the school board for segregating Floris in the recent RD!)
10:40 PM Wednesday, June 18, 2008
It is the High School students who NEED the latest start times (9:20), NOT the middle schoolers! Why won't FCPS acknowledge/accommodate the developmental and biological sleep needs of these groups??? WHY DOES FCPS ONLY CARE ABOUT THE NEEDS
OF THE STUPID BUS SCHEDULES? WHO DOES FCPS really intend to serve? STUDENTS..
or BUSSES? FCPS actions tell all. I am personally disgusted with FCPS' long history of "bus worship". What about the kids? Would YOU like to be in Calculus class at 7:30 am every day? NO! Absolutely not. The current school schedules are
idiotic in Fairfax County and rob ALL family members of adequate sleep.
07:04 AM Thursday, June 19, 2008
Middle schoolers have considerable homework and important extracurricular activities, as do high school students. They need to be home earlier than 4pm. More elementary schools should start in the later time frame.
06:18 PM Thursday, June 19, 2008
Starting Middle School around the time of High school
11:58 PM Thursday, June 19, 2008
get more buses so the high scool students could start at 8 to 9 like the rest of
the world.
07:36 AM Friday, June 20, 2008
Put the high schools in the latest start slot, load elementary schools in the ea
rliest - young kids are up early anyway. Put Middle Schools in the middle.
07:52 AM Friday, June 20, 2008
School should begin around 8:20 am and end 3:00 pm. If she has 2 hr practices afterschool, it's still early & still daylight, even during fall season.
09:42 AM Friday, June 20, 2008
High school students have jobs, sports and other extracurricular activities that
would be affected by a later ending day, I think a start time half an hour earlier makes better sense.
02:57 PM Friday, June 20, 2008
Add more buses, consolidate bus stops, encourage more walking to school and using more crossing guards to facilitate walking and biking.
05:31 PM Friday, June 20, 2008
7:50 may be a bit too early to start for elementary and 4:30 is way too late to
end for middle school. They have way too much homework to do before they would
potentially have to go to practice for sports. I prefer my kids to do their homework right after school when everything is fresh in their minds and they are no
t too tired. Middle school sports might be a way to amend this problem.
08:24 AM Saturday, June 21, 2008
Make the middle schools start earlier
09:00 AM Saturday, June 21, 2008
start later then now but earlier then 8:55. If they would be picked up at 7:30
to start at 8:20 would be perfect for me.
09:57 AM Saturday, June 21, 2008
I would like the highschool start time and middle school start time to be switch
ed.
01:51 PM Saturday, June 21, 2008
Middle schools switch w/ high school
02:15 PM Saturday, June 21, 2008
In a school such as Robinson, where MS and HS are in the same building, it makes
sense to have them start and release at the same time so that siblings are traveling together and on the same schedule.
03:01 PM Saturday, June 21, 2008
I think the middle school and elementary school could switch the times and have
the elementary school kids get out later.
03:11 PM Saturday, June 21, 2008
Robinson is a secondary school. So it would be easier if middle school and highs
chool had the same times.
03:42 PM Saturday, June 21, 2008
start at 8:00 am so students do not have to stay that late. 3:15 would be very l
ate and students who participate in after school activities would end up going home around 6.
04:45 PM Saturday, June 21, 2008
Swap middle and elementary schedules so middle schoolers get out earlier.
06:51 PM Saturday, June 21, 2008
switch the proposals for middle and high schools
08:29 PM Saturday, June 21, 2008
4:30 is too late for middle school to end. By the time homework gets done, the
kids have no afternoon left for themselves!
01:02 PM Sunday, June 22, 2008
Middle school starts too late
03:05 PM Sunday, June 22, 2008
Making the highschool students later than middle school or the same time.
04:31 PM Sunday, June 22, 2008
middle school beginning at about same time as high school
05:08 PM Sunday, June 22, 2008
In stead of starting at 8:35 I think it would be better to start at 8:00. They
would still be able to sleep in a little and function better in the mornings, as
well as, be able to participate in after school activities and still come home
by 5:00 pm.
09:02 PM Sunday, June 22, 2008
I don't think the elementary schools should start before 8:30 AM.
11:55 PM Sunday, June 22, 2008
high school and middle school start at 9:00, elementary start at 8:00 or 8:30
06:18 AM Monday, June 23, 2008
My only concern is after school activities like sports. Some nights during the
year, especially with games, he doesnt get home before 11
07:50 AM Monday, June 23, 2008
The middle schoolers are getting out too late. If the teachers could guarantee
a resonable amount of homework it would work but my son is often OVERLOADED with
homework assignments.
08:29 AM Monday, June 23, 2008
High School student should start at 9-9:40--not the middle school--the whole pur
pose is to accomodate the older teens that need the extra sleep--to increase per
formance for college academic performance. Middle Schoolers are just beginning
to shift their internal clocks and are not on the line-weight:normal; line for college bound academi
cs and results
08:35 AM Monday, June 23, 2008
switch the high school and middle school schedule.
08:43 AM Monday, June 23, 2008
Ending high schools past 3 does not work with after-school schedules.
09:51 AM Monday, June 23, 2008
I think that the time for high schools to get out is too late in the day. I wou
ld prefer the elementary school times better for high school.
10:06 AM Monday, June 23, 2008
Get rid of the mandatory PE class and shortent heday. The kids WE know, all are
in extracurricular activities and don't get anything of of the PE class anyway.
Perhaps just have 1 semester of health class....
01:44 PM Monday, June 23, 2008
Middle school should start the same as the high school (9:20-9:40 is too late)
03:41 PM Monday, June 23, 2008
the high schools should start the latest, and the elementary schools should star
t the earliest because younger children have way more energy than high school ag
ed children
05:52 PM Monday, June 23, 2008
I would prefer high school start the latest between 9:20 and 9:40 am. I would p
refer middle schools start between 8:35-8:55.
10:29 PM Monday, June 23, 2008
Middle school end time is too late for kids that do sports after school. If they
ride a bus home they would not get home until almost 5pm. Most practices start
by 5:30 leaving little time to change and grab a snack as well as drive thru our
gridlocked traffic to get to practice. This is particularly a problem when it g
ets dark at 5:30 or 6pm.
10:46 PM Monday, June 23, 2008
C because the after school programs would be destroyed by ending at 4-4:30
11:56 PM Monday, June 23, 2008
for those families that have children in secondary schools where middle and high
schoolers are in the same facility, the start and finish times need to be the s
ame.
07:16 AM Tuesday, June 24, 2008
Would the middle school and high school starts be the same early time for second
ary schools like Robinson? If so, then okay, otherwise, way too late for middle
school. My high schooler is able to get homework done and be ready for evening
activities with the current schedule (although the early morning is tough at ti
mes). I do think kids will just stay up later with later start times. Also diff
icult to rework the child care in the afternoon if elem ends so early.
09:14 AM Tuesday, June 24, 2008
How will this be possible where you currently have middle and high schoolers on
the same bus? Why not have those MS and HS start and end close to each other? H
ow do you handle the secondary schools?
10:51 AM Tuesday, June 24, 2008
Middle schools start from 8:30am and 8:50am (end 3:10-3:40)
11:20 AM Tuesday, June 24, 2008
The days seem long as it is for Elementary students. Extending the day would se
em longer and not allow for much time at home with a break before doing HOMEWORK
! It already feels like they are doing work all day. MIDDLE SCHOOL and HIGH SC
HOOL should start at the same times with an ending time of around 3PM. This pre
pares them for the reality of adulthood in which you often have to wake early to
go to work but no so early that the kids don't get adequate rest.
11:42 AM Tuesday, June 24, 2008
Some high schooler's have jobs they need to get to or to sports unrelated to sch
ool.
12:56 PM Tuesday, June 24, 2008
we have a middle school with the high school, i assume they would have the same
schedule, you will have to see how after school study sessions, sports, buses wo
uld be affected too.
01:36 PM Tuesday, June 24, 2008
even later start time
03:39 PM Tuesday, June 24, 2008
Find a way to end middle school a bit earlier. It seems a bit late to end schoo
l, considering children may have after school activities and homework.
04:59 PM Tuesday, June 24, 2008
Middle School students would be going and coming too late for their extra-curric
ular activities.
06:25 PM Tuesday, June 24, 2008
Middle school start times are too late.
01:05 AM Wednesday, June 25, 2008
H.S. Start at 7:45
08:20 AM Wednesday, June 25, 2008
the HS schedule is better -- there may be issues with the elementary school time
s.
08:24 AM Wednesday, June 25, 2008
seems a little late for middle school
08:49 AM Wednesday, June 25, 2008
The delay is about hour - better but not by much. The buses would still come to
o early for this start time. 9:00 would be even better.
10:19 AM Wednesday, June 25, 2008
It seems Middle School start times are too late; Also, concern about sharing bus
es between Middle-High School if times are staggered.
11:37 AM Wednesday, June 25, 2008
I'd like to see middle and high schools start at the same time
12:06 PM Wednesday, June 25, 2008
1. 8:00 is too early for elementary school kids. 9:00 is perfect, but they requi
re a lot more time in the morning to get dressed, eat, etc., than teenagers and
middle schoolers. An 8:45-9:00 start is perfect for elementary.
too late for Middle Schoolers to begin. Some middle schools include 6th grade (
10 and 11 year olds), so parents still need to be at home in the morning for the
m, so this later time makes it very difficult for working parents. Make the high
schoolers the later time.
12:29 PM Wednesday, June 25, 2008
An 8:00 to 3:00 bell would be best for high school. Not too early, but leaves t
ime for after school sports.
04:22 PM Wednesday, June 25, 2008
8:35 am and 8:55 am is too late. 8:00 am would be a more reasonable time to star
t and end at 3:10.
08:17 PM Wednesday, June 25, 2008
Middle school starts and ends too late. A schedule similar to the high school sc
hedule would be better.
08:29 PM Wednesday, June 25, 2008
The world is run by the bus schedule! I like the high school schedule above is
ok, but the middle school schedule ends too late(4PM!). It's not worth the chang
e!!!A 8:35 for both hi and middle is better ending at 3:15, but probably not do-
able simultaneously because of buses.
09:33 PM Wednesday, June 25, 2008
Earlier start time (e.g., 8:45 a.m.) for middle school is preferred to match wor
k times for both parents.
09:53 PM Wednesday, June 25, 2008
Middle schools should be coordinated with high schools and begin and end earlier
.
10:52 PM Wednesday, June 25, 2008
Middle school starts too late. There is not enough time for after school enrichm
ent activities, home work. Also, I cannot get to work timely if I must wait for
middle school age child to get to school.
03:20 AM Thursday, June 26, 2008
Get middle school to start earlier than 9:20-9:40
08:04 AM Thursday, June 26, 2008
I prefer the middle school schedule to be closer to the high school schedule
08:05 AM Thursday, June 26, 2008
My concern is the word MOST because if I voted "A" and ended up with a 9:40 star
t time....that would not be good. My current schedule is better but I would like
to see an earlier start time.
08:52 AM Thursday, June 26, 2008
All elementary schools should start between 8:00-8:30. The later times are just
a waste of my child's time in the morning. They are up and alert. These are t
he kids that NEED time in the afternoon, after homework, etc, to just play. Thi
s seems such a foreign concept around here.
08:55 AM Thursday, June 26, 2008
Starting by 9:15 for Middle Schools
09:08 AM Thursday, June 26, 2008
Middle school would end too late.
09:32 AM Thursday, June 26, 2008
The middle school ending time of 4:00-4:30 seems late. If kids ride buses, it co
uld be 5:00 until they get home, not leaving much time for after-school activite
s and homework.
06:19 PM Thursday, June 26, 2008
Your schedule for the elementary start time leaves too wide a gap - 7:50 - 9:20.
I definitely do not want my children getting on the bus any earlier than they
already do - 8:35. Middle and High school children need a later start time but
not at the expense of rushing elementary school children out the door so early.
06:14 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
I like the current times for elementary and middle school students.
06:15 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
Middle school starting slightly earlier, e.g. 8:45 - 9:15
06:20 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
The middle school needs to start earlier, and let out earlier..
06:47 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
I agree high school should start later but middle school would start too late.
06:51 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
Start Middle Schools around the same time as High Schools, and leave Elementary
Schools unchanged.
07:53 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
Starting school at 9:40 is really late fo MS. I would like to see a later start
time but not that late. 8:30 to 9 seems ideal.
08:49 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
High School start time of 8:00 AM
08:57 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
Elementary students should start at 7:30 when they are fresh. Too many el. stud
ents have been up for hours before they get started in class at 8:55
09:46 AM Thursday, June 26, 2008
7:50 is too early for start considering wake up, breakfast, bus etc. 8:15 is the
earliest I would prefer
09:52 AM Thursday, June 26, 2008
Soon I will have children in elementary and middle schools. I feel it is import
ant that I am at home with them until they leave for school. The new recommende
d schedule would make that impossible with regard to work schedules.
09:52 AM Thursday, June 26, 2008
The middle schools should start a bit earlier than 9:20...it makes after school
activities too hard w/homework.
09:58 AM Thursday, June 26, 2008
I think it's too late for the middle school to come home.
09:59 AM Thursday, June 26, 2008
I feel the middle schoolers get home very late. How do they participate in band
, chorus or dramas?
10:02 AM Thursday, June 26, 2008
If Middle School/High School is getting out late, the buses will be home late, s
o the homework load needs to be substantially lightened -- because they are supp
osed to be SLEEPING later in the morning -- right? - not doing homework then. I
f the amount of homework stays the same, this could be a huge problem --kids wil
l be up until 11 pm doing homework -- of the bus at 5:15, eat dinner, go to acti
vity, do homework starting at 9:30pm? Also, more parents will have to pick their
MS kids up to make sports/piano/Scouts, extracirricular activities, so Kiss & R
ide will be more crowded.
10:10 AM Thursday, June 26, 2008
The middle schools need to start earlier. If we need to alter the early out on
Mondays for elementary schools to accommodate the transportation changes, let's
do it! Maybe middle and high school students could ride the same bus....
10:17 AM Thursday, June 26, 2008
The elementary kids should start ealry, get home early and go to bed early. the
older kids should sleep the latest. So, I do like the idea but a 9:00 start for
them is so late!
10:31 AM Thursday, June 26, 2008
I would not want my elementary school children to start at 7:55 am.
10:44 AM Thursday, June 26, 2008
I believe all Elementary should get out of school before 3pm. My children ride
the bus to a school that dismisses at 3:35pm--they don't get home until 4pm. If
they have any after school activities, they have not time for homework after sc
hool until AFTER their activities. My children would have an earlier bedtime ex
cept that school gets out so late, it is difficult to get everything in before 8
pm.
10:49 AM Thursday, June 26, 2008
I'm not sure how this would impact the school bus schedule, but I think the Midd
le Schoolers should start at 8:35 am and end at 3:15. The late end time of 4pm w
ould create hardship for our family since our oldest son makes sure his younger
sister is home safte. He is very responsible and does an outstanding job.
10:50 AM Thursday, June 26, 2008
I think that we need to allow for homework time and after school activities. M
iddle School and HS should be around 8:30 and end around same time as ES - By
the time a working parent gets home and gets kids homework, extra activity - I d
on't want my children not having enough time for the homework.
10:52 AM Thursday, June 26, 2008
Increase the number of buses so each bus only makes one trip and STOP zoning chi
ldren outside of their logical school radius of their homes. A student should no
t have to wake up at 5:00 am to be bused to a school when they live less than 2
miles from a school (this is ridiculous and a major cause of this time schedule
problem).
11:35 AM Thursday, June 26, 2008
That is still so much variability in the start times for elementary schools.
11:53 AM Thursday, June 26, 2008
12:18 PM Thursday, June 26, 2008
Why would middle school start later than high school? If student health is the i
ssue, don't the studies show that the teenagers need to sleep later?
12:33 PM Thursday, June 26, 2008
Don't start any elementary school after 9:00 -- it gets them home too late in th
e day when they ride a bus.
12:48 PM Thursday, June 26, 2008
Keep High Schools with the current schedule
01:19 PM Thursday, June 26, 2008
Middle school starts too late, but I realize it is a bussing issue. Is it possi
ble to have Middle school starting no later than 9am?
03:03 PM Thursday, June 26, 2008
Make the high school start times later
03:22 PM Thursday, June 26, 2008
The middle school time is too late!
07:09 PM Thursday, June 26, 2008
I like the schedule in terms of the benefits of more sleep for adolescents. Sinc
e Frost and Woodson currently share the same busses, i assume that would continu
e to be the case. So if Woodson started at 8:35, Frost would start soon after. E
ven if Woodson didn't start until 8:55, Frost would start before 9:20 if the 2 s
chools continue to share busses. I know this is a fairly unique situation among
high and middle schools in FCPS, but this issue isn't addressed in the survey, s
o it's a little hard to respond accurately without knowing more specific informa
tion about this. The issue is complicated by the fact that i teach at Baileys' E
lementary school. I kind of need to know what the start times would be for the s
chools my children attend as well as the one where i work before i know how bec
ause it will impact my family schedule both before and after school. I also am c
oncerned that because Frost/Woodson serves a smaller population than the larger
schools, they may get the latest (worst) start times. It might mean that my chi
ldren (7th and 9th graders) would be responsible for getting up by themselves an
d getting themselves off to school without me there as a backup if they miss the
bus or to provide any help such as them not sleeping through the alarm, which t
07:51 PM Thursday, June 26, 2008
Start at 8:00 until 3:00pm
08:50 PM Thursday, June 26, 2008
ES should not start after 9 a.m.
08:52 PM Thursday, June 26, 2008
Having a late start time for high schools, as suggested, but the same end time.
09:22 PM Thursday, June 26, 2008
High School should start later than is. Students can't learn properly at such a
n early time. Don't know how to best work with that, though
10:05 PM Thursday, June 26, 2008
Compromise for high schools starting around 8:00 instead of 7:20 AM or 8:35 AM.
Schedule middle and elementary schools accordingly.
11:00 PM Thursday, June 26, 2008
middle schools start earlier(closer to HS schedule)
11:03 PM Thursday, June 26, 2008
I want MY school to start no later than 8:30.
11:25 PM Thursday, June 26, 2008
Middle and High school should still have the same start times. 4-4:30 is too lat
e. Elementary school kids have less activities so start them earlier, they get u
p earlier anyways!
09:45 AM Friday, June 27, 2008
Middle/High School startting as late as 8:55 is to late. it interferes with dow
ntime/homework/activities/work. Getting home at/after 4pm they are losing at le
ast 1 1/2 hrs of critical afterschool time. They would be up too late doing hom
ework when their brains are shutting down for the evening.
10:32 AM Friday, June 27, 2008
Consider traffic tie ups on the roads as well. Less homework for the students w
ith all the changes.
10:40 AM Friday, June 27, 2008
Thank you for inititing this long needed survey/study. However, here is my conc
ern. Middle School start times are not in-line-weight:normal; line with what we know from sleep res
earch. That is, as students get older, they are driven to stay up later, and th
ey need more sleep. Therefore, middle school start times should be switched with
high school times. I know the impact this would have on HS sports, but what is
the school's main mission? From personal experience, my daughter who is in midd
le school has no problem getting up at 6:00am; it's my son who is in High School
that struggles to get up, and runs out the door with an Ensure and Power Bar...
.if he remembers. IDEA/Solution: Why not have rolling start times? That is, if
HS students have to care for younger siblings or if they have to go to work aft
er school, they could chose to come in earlier. Students who do not have after s
chool responsibilities could come in later. Teacher contract times would be adj
usted to student needs/scheduling. This is the practice in European countries.
10:43 AM Friday, June 27, 2008
Middle school start time is to late. Most parents need to be at work by 9:00.
Just a 30 minute shift for HS would be good.
10:43 AM Friday, June 27, 2008
I prefer Elementary schools to start later, as my kids sleep in late. They like
to play outside in the evenings when the temperatures are more pleasant, which p
uts us on a later bed-time schedule.
10:54 AM Friday, June 27, 2008
I'd worry about HS ending later causing after school activities and practices to
run too late also.
11:37 AM Friday, June 27, 2008
The middle school - ending at 4:30 would preclude kids from participating in aft
er school activities (those not taking place at school. And I think the start t
ime is just a little too late for families where parents work.
12:52 PM Friday, June 27, 2008
Middle school is starting too late--9:40 is too late
01:00 PM Friday, June 27, 2008
End all elementary schools no later than 3:35pm. Otherwise they get home too ti
red to do homework.
02:16 PM Friday, June 27, 2008
I think Middle School and High School should still start around the same time.
Older kids are needed to watch younger children.
02:25 PM Friday, June 27, 2008
The proposed changes are vague because it's not clear as to how the change would
actually affect the schedule at Daniels Run elementary.
03:08 PM Friday, June 27, 2008
Middle schools should be the same as high schools otherwise buses from dismissal
will probably be caught in rush hour traffic in this area.
04:48 PM Friday, June 27, 2008
I have an early riser going in to 8th grade. So, it is specific to my kids. w/
all the homework, kids do need ample time after school and before dinner to com
plete tasks, sports, etc.
06:47 PM Friday, June 27, 2008
I would really hate for my elementary school to open late because of work. Findi
ng morning care is difficult. An 8AM to 8:15AM start time really works best, like
we did in 06-07!
07:01 PM Friday, June 27, 2008
Middle school schedule gets out quite late, and it would be difficult for middle
school students to partake in after school activities (such as sports) and comp
lete all homework.
08:32 PM Friday, June 27, 2008
start elementary school 8:00-8:45
09:51 PM Friday, June 27, 2008
Starting elementary school at 9:20 would cause great difficulty in families wher
e both parents work.
10:47 PM Friday, June 27, 2008
I like the HS start time, but, No school should begin before 8:00 AM
12:17 AM Saturday, June 28, 2008
I would prefer that all schools, elementary, middle and high start at 9:00. I t
hink all kids would do better with more sleep. If it can only be one or the oth
er then it should definitely be highschools that start the latest as they are th
e students with the most homework and go to bed the latest. In the scedule you
have proposed middle schools are the latest to start but I think it should be hi
ghschool. Thank you so much for addressing this problem. It is beyond stupid t
hat we have teenagers starting so early. And if it's because of sports, then th
at is even more insane. Let the athletes practice before school if that's what
they want but don't force everyone else to go early so afternoons are free for a
thletes to practice.
07:28 AM Saturday, June 28, 2008
The Final Report states "MS and HS students may ride the same bus at any time" -
so why not have the HS and MS start and end at the same time, with the HS and M
S students riding the busses together?
08:49 AM Saturday, June 28, 2008
Middle School Start times seem late, but I understand the difficulty in getting
bus schedules arranged. I wonder why you would have Middle Schools starting and
ending later than Elementary Schools - unless this is for child-care reasons -
or middle school kids needing to sleep later?
10:06 AM Saturday, June 28, 2008
Elementary schools' schedule is just right; middle and high school should start
no later than 8am
10:44 AM Saturday, June 28, 2008
Switch Middle and HS time slots
04:15 PM Saturday, June 28, 2008
I think that middle school and high school ends too late. It runs into evening a
ctivities and then would push my child's bedtime later. It woul allow for less ti
me in the afternoon for homework and activites and just plain breathing time - w
hich the DON'T get at school. I like them to have at least 9 hours of sleep per
night.
04:56 PM Saturday, June 28, 2008
Switching the Middle Schools and Elementary Schools schedules
09:24 PM Saturday, June 28, 2008
Starting somewhat earlier than the proposed 9:20 and 9:40 - but this is still be
tter than starting so early in the morning.
12:49 PM Sunday, June 29, 2008
Why couldn't middle school and high school begin roughly at the same time? The
problems arisng from sleep deprivation seem to begin in middle school and contin
ue, if not increase, through the teenage years.
01:59 PM Sunday, June 29, 2008
Start high school later than middle school; high school students need more sleep
than middle school students.
03:10 PM Sunday, June 29, 2008
Could the proposed middle school/H.S. start times be reversed (with the H.S. stu
dents starting latest of all?) Or would that really hinder their work schedules,
etc.? It seems like the H.S. children need the most sleep. However, if it is
very inconvenient, or if it is actually the middle school children who need the
latest start time due to their growth spurts, then the current proposal is great
, and we are all for it. GO FOR IT!!!!!
03:17 PM Sunday, June 29, 2008
Middle school start time is a bit late, but I prefer later than earlier.
04:38 PM Sunday, June 29, 2008
Not that it affects us, but that is too late for middle school to get out.
08:08 PM Sunday, June 29, 2008
Having a two week Christmas break each year to facilitate visits with relatives
out of the area.
08:20 PM Sunday, June 29, 2008
End the day earlier than 4:00, to leave enough time for sports and extra-curricu
lar activities. Also the homework load that teachers assign is outrageous and le
ngthens the students' day.
11:03 PM Sunday, June 29, 2008
Does middle school have to start that late?
12:46 AM Monday, June 30, 2008
Swap High and Middle start times
06:54 AM Monday, June 30, 2008
Have the Middle school schedule and the elementary school schedule switch so tha
t middles schools start at 7:50-8:55
08:21 AM Monday, June 30, 2008
Elementary first, middle school second, high school last, starting with the prop
osed times for elementary school.
08:25 AM Monday, June 30, 2008
Middle & High Schools on the 8:35--3:15 schedule
e school to get home for after school activities like confirmation/sports practi
ces/etc.
08:41 AM Monday, June 30, 2008
2:30 is pretty early for ending elementary for working parents -- would need to
utilize SACC or have afterschool in-school"homework help" options. afterschool
childcare may be easier to find than before school, though.
08:49 AM Monday, June 30, 2008
No school should start before 8:30am, because the bus pickups in many cases have
to be a hour or more before start time. Children that do not get good night sle
eps usually do not do as well academically.
09:29 AM Monday, June 30, 2008
I would like to see middle school start between 8:35 and 8:55 and high schools s
tart between 9:20 and 9:40. However, if that's not feasible, I fully support the
recommended schedule.
09:37 AM Monday, June 30, 2008
The Middle School Schedule seems too late to me. I would recommend that the Mid
dle Schools be on the same schedule as the High Schools
10:38 AM Monday, June 30, 2008
I understand wanting the Middle Schools to start later, but at some point I will
have a middle and high schooler at the same time, so for me it would help if th
ey were on similar schedules. Also, I can't start work until the last kid leave
s for school even though I work out of the house.
10:50 AM Monday, June 30, 2008
High school should start the latest.
11:36 AM Monday, June 30, 2008
It would work if Dranesville remained on the later (9:20) schedule. High School
should start later.
11:57 AM Monday, June 30, 2008
middle school starts a little too late and ends too late in the afternoon- more
reasonable would be similar to the high school start and end times
12:04 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
Elementary school start is too early, meaning little ones would have to get up b
etween 5 and 6AM.
12:06 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
Later for HS, earlier for ES as recommended, not quite as late for MS as recomme
nded.
01:16 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
I'm concerned about the impact to afterschool activities.
01:54 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
Middle starts too late/goes too late
02:06 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
Kids need to sleep more in the morning to be fully aware of what's going on in c
lasses.
02:11 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
Starting high school around 8
02:40 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
All High Schools start at 7:30, Middle Schools 8:00, Elementary Schools start at
8:30.
02:42 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
high school starts around 8:00 and ends around 2:40 so afterschool activities ar
e not affected as much
03:32 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
middle School start and end should be more inline-weight:normal; line with HS.
03:52 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
Even though I will not have a Middle School child, I think 9:20 is too late to s
tart.
04:02 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
Middle school starts and ends too late. If buses weren't doing double duty picki
ng up students for three different high schools in the same neighborhood, we wou
ld have enough transportation to have middle school at a reasonable hour and sti
ll start high school a little later.
04:05 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
Elementary schools get out too early. They would be left home alone until the hi
ghschool got out.
04:16 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
I like the suggested start times for the elementary and high schools, but think
middle school starting so late would be problematic for families with working pa
rents.
05:29 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
Son is in Crew and they practice after school
05:51 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
The Middle school starts to late.
10:34 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
HS should start closer to 8 to 8:30 and Middle School hours seem too late--shoul
d be closer to 8:30
11:02 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
Not to go to school around 7:20 like high school students do now, but go in arou
nd 8 and get out around quarter to 3
11:11 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
middle schools starting earlier 8:30-8:50
11:22 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
make the high school the latest start
11:22 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
Starting Middle Schools after 9 AM is a bit too late -- no time for after school
appointments, etc.
11:41 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
Middle school MUST start later than the current start times, but 9:20-9:40 is to
o late!
11:45 PM Monday, June 30, 2008
Elementary schools should open first, then middle schools, then high schools.
12:27 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Start middle school before elementary school so middle school children can provi
de care for elementary school siblings.
12:54 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
High School Students need to start later.
01:00 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
High school latest start time 8:45 and middle school latest start time 9:00.
01:29 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
That High Schools should be starting between 9:20 and 9:40, whereas middleschoo
ls should be starting between 8:35 and 8:55
02:25 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
middle schools start too late
06:12 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
High School should have the hours of 7:50 - 8:55
5-8:55
06:35 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Middle schools would start WAY too late and would make it difficult for students
to participate in after school sports while also having time for homework. Ele
mentary schools should start earlier (young children are up anyway!).
07:23 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Just shift all school schedule one hour.
07:38 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
That high school students definitely need to sleep in later in the morning.
07:41 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Jr. High would start/end too late. Use fewer, more efficient routes for high sc
hoolers - many can drive/walk/public transp. Or, stagger morning schedule for op
t. latter start/end time. We already have a "late" bus, let's have a later start
for those who prefer, but let them provide their own transportation. Radical!
07:56 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Nothing will be perfect, but high school ending a little earlier in the afternoo
n than suggested would be optimal for getting homework done before sports and ot
her activities after school.
08:00 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I would prefer that middle and high school have very similar schedules -- middle
school is only two years. don't know if that can happen w/bus schedules, but w
ould like all kids out of school by 4:00 at the latest...
08:01 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
The only reason I answered B is b/c I have a 7 year old who will have a hard tim
e getting to elementary school at 7:50. She's rarely on time and her school sta
rts at 8:50. But I'm willing to live with an earlier start time for elementary
school b/c I think sleep deprivation harms the older children more.
08:07 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
seems too late for middle schools. I would support this option if it were the o
nly one available to relieve the early start times but would rather see middle s
chool start earlier than 9:20
08:09 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
The middle schoolers will be going too late in the day.
08:10 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I would switch HS and Middle School schedule
08:23 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Later start times. Crazy our teens are up so early.
08:26 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
There needs to be a lot of research into whether older children that need to wor
k after school and/or care for younger siblings will not be an issue.
08:45 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I am concerned with the elementary school that starts around 9:20 ending at 4. T
hat would effectively be the entire day, because my kids get up so early, they n
eed to go earlier. By not getting home until 4 - even later if they have aftersc
hool activities, all they would do is eat dinner and go to bed.
09:02 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
If it's based solely on sleep routines, Elementary first, Middle second, High Sc
hool last. But maybe it's based on high school students working after school.
09:06 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Switch proposed start times for middle and high school so high school starts las
t and ends last
09:07 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Later start hours for high schools
09:07 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Elementary should still start early in my opinion. Kids go to bed earlier, get
up earlier and parents need to be at work.
09:16 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I would suggest swapping the high school and middle school schedules, since the
older the kids are, the harder it is to get up early.
09:20 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Middle school to keep the current start time 7:20-8:15
09:24 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Don't have the high school end so late--need to keep in mind that students parti
cipate in after school jobs/sports/activities. Perhaps build in a study hall tim
e if it ends that late, providing the option for kids that don't have afterschoo
l commitments to a)go home and do homework or b) go to any teacher for specific
help.
09:25 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Reverse the Middle School and High School start times with the High Schools havi
ng the latest start times. In my experience, my child had the most significant
issues with sleep beginning around the age of 15. Being able to sleep in until
8 and still get to school by 9:20 would have been WONDERFUL!
09:31 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
High schools start a bit earlier than 8:35 a.m. A start time of 8 a.m. would al
low teachers to stay for after school meetings and offer extra help to students
but wouldn't make the afternoon run so late. Students could also complete after
school athletic practices and games in a more timely manner than if school star
ted at 8:35.
09:32 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
later start time for elementary school too
09:33 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Make EVERYBODY later. Why should a bus driver be up in the middle of the night
to start transporting folks at 5:00 a.m.? It's insane. Kids simply need more s
leep, and so do their families. Why have people transported in darkness?
09:37 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Middle school start too late.
09:39 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
high schoolers need the later time slot
09:40 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
There is no reason to have so many bus stops. When we were all growing up, peop
le who had bus service had to walk to the bus stop. So what if the bus stop is
a ten-minute walk.
before-school clubs" to accommodate parents who must drop their kids off while o
n their way to work. You may need to open the library and cafeteria for "study
hall." Yes, a before-school study hall is a tremendous ideal.
09:47 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Change middle school to start and end earlier.
09:50 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I haven't heard how this might impact TJ students, whose school already starts l
ater than other high schools and whose commutes are longer, too.
10:12 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Middle Schools would end rather late with the proposed schedule.
10:14 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I am not crazy about middle school ending so late, but it's only for 2 years so
it's certainly manageable.
10:27 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I think it's better that high schools start time is later than middle schools
10:28 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I agree that it would be preferable to start high schools later, but starting el
ementary school at 7:50am is way too early. I would prefer to start elementary
school later in the morning (after the high school and middle school bus routes
are completed).
10:30 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Middle school times too late
10:32 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
make high school start after 9:00
10:33 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Switch the high school to the latest start time, and the middle school to the mi
ddle start time.
10:35 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
The start and end times for middle schools seem a bit too late.
10:36 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Elementary students should not be in school until 4:00 p.m. With the current ve
ry laborious dismissal procedures and bus routes, they could easily not get home
until after 5:00. This year at Bull Run Elementary, although the school dismis
sed at 3:40, the first bus did not leave the parking lot until 4:00 and the thre
e mile trip to Sully Station (Cub Run Elementary area) took 45 minutes!!! Thus t
he long carpool line-weight:normal; lines at Bull Run.
10:45 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
It is important for HS to get out eariler, but Elementary schools should start e
arlier too. I don't know how to reconcile this. Now that my kids are in HS the
early schedule works for us - Elementary was a challange w/the late starting ti
me.
10:49 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
A 4:30 PM end-time for Middle School, plus a ~30 minute bus ride, doesn't get th
em home before 5 PM. My only real concern with this is that they need sufficien
t time to deal with the heavy homework load. Actually, reducing the homework lo
ad would be an excellent solution - if it can't be done in class then don't do i
t. At the moment, Frost & Woodson students ride the same bus - why does this ha
ve to change? Grades K-6 and 7-12 divide the bus load nicely at the moment so w
hy not just shift the current start times by 30 - 45 minutes?
10:55 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Look to leave middle school starting at the same time it is now.
11:04 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
9:20-9:40 is too late for middle schools to start - virtually all parents have t
o be at work long before that
11:17 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I would switch the high school start time to between 9:20 and 9:40, especially s
ince most high school students are on their own after school. There are some, an
d there should be more, accommodations for middle school students after school.
11:22 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I like High and Middle schools starting before Elementary. And getting home befo
re them. High School starts much too early for these kids.
11:26 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Middle and elem. schools would be starting too late (9:20) in this new plan for
working parents to drop off or get out the door before work. We already have t
he 8:30 start and it is the latest I can leave and still make it to work and I w
ork closeby.
11:39 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
That is too late for middle schoolers to start and get out! My daughter wouldn'
t have enough time to get to activities on time. It is a half hour ride home on
the bus so she wouldn't be home until 4:30 or 5. That's not ok.
11:41 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Ryan goes to Westfield High. The later start for high schools would be much bet
ter!
11:46 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
If Middle Schools could start and end closer to the high school schedule.
11:55 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I am concerned about the impact on teachers -- especially Middle school teachers
-- who are expected to stay after for an hour on late bus days-- which would now
reach into dinner hours. I would like feedback from teachers on these changes.
11:58 AM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Elementary students might be ok with an earlier start time. I worry about gettin
g to work (I start at 8 am) and the impact on two working parents of these late
times. I guess that is what is happening now anyway, however. High Schools and M
iddle schools will leave a lot of children home alone in the am, while parents g
o to work, and there will be a lot of missed buses.
12:14 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I think that starting school at 7:50 for my elementary school child would make i
t too early for her to catch the bus and also too early of a school day for her.
Providence currently starts school at 8:20 with a bus pick up at 7:25 for my e
lementary schooler. I could not support an earlier time for her. I do think th
e later times for middle and high schoolers are a good idea, however, I think el
ementary school should not start before 8:00.
12:15 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Reverse Middle School and HS start times
12:28 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Consider teachers in High Schools that have students in Middle or elementary sch
ools and a SACC system that does not support the fact that High school teachers
need to be at work before SACC is even open.
t are not supportive of Teachers schedules when they have students in Elementary
or Middle schools with later start times and no way to get them to school.
12:50 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
have high schools start at the latest time, 9:20-9:40
01:28 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Middle schools should start in the same time frame as high school, but even if t
his change couldn't be make, I would support the recommendation. Anything is be
tter than the current "crack of dawn" start times.
01:34 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
The late end start time of 9:20 puts the kids home too late. There is more rush
hour traffic so it could possibly be even later than the 4 pm. Where is the ti
me to play outside with the other kids that are home (in the winter they would b
e home at dark or around and in the morning it is colder to be outside). Also i
n our house we eat at 5:30-6:00. Also what about sports practises.
01:38 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
A 6 year old kindergartener needs the most sleep of anyone. Sure, it's painful
for 16 year olds to wake up early, but they're nearly adults. Why not stagger g
rades K-2 and 3-6?
01:49 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
The order should be elementary, middle then high school.
01:53 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I agree HS students need to start later. I think we need to be careful about st
arting our elementary students too early. A young child who does not get enough
sleep can create all sorts of problems. They are growing and developing. As lo
ng as you do not start our elementary students too early(before 8:30), then I ag
ree with the later start time for our HS students
01:54 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
The issue with me is not the bell schedule, its the bus schedule. High Schools s
tarting at 7:20 is fine, but having to catch a bus before 6:00am is not fine.
02:05 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
The current schedule allows our middle-school student an opportunity to particip
ate in both after-school activities (orchestra, practice until 4:00PM) as well a
s non-school sports (soccer, practice starts at 4:30PM). The proposed alternativ
e schedule creates conflict in these two activities.
02:09 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
In a few more years, I will most likely depend on my middle schooler to watch my
elementary aged kids after school. The way that it is proposed would make that
impossible in most instances. I still believe that the highschoolers should ge
t out first.
02:16 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I think it's a good solution. Also, to explain the odd answers to my child's sl
eep times, he is chronically ill and is home tutored, but I still support later
start times for high school students, even if my children won't benefit directly
.
02:20 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I would STOP early dismissal at 1:15 for schools. It is very hard on working pa
rents/single parents that can't afford afternoon daycare!!!!!!!
02:21 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
The middle school should not be this late. High School getting out at 3:30 give
s plenty of time for after school activities, but lets them slip until after 7:3
0. My recent high school graduate did not function the first half of 1st period
. She was often up until after 1am with AP course work. Middle school students
could definitely begin by at least 8:30 am. I feel getting out at 4:30 is much
too late
02:21 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I would switch the starting times between middle and high schools so elementary
schools start earliest, followed by middle schools, with the high schools starti
ng latest.
02:25 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
The schools need to end earlier. The students recieve so much homework, but not
enough time after school to complete it. Kids also have other activities after
school that they have to worry about.
02:49 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Have middle schools starting at 8:35 to 8:55 and high schools starting at 9:20 t
o 9:40. Older kids stay up later at night and therefore should get to sleep in
the longest. Getting out at 4:00 or 4:30 should still give them time to attend
after school sports and clubs. And it makes sense for elementary school childre
n to start first at 7:50 to 8:55 because they go to bed early and they wake up e
arly anyway. Besides, the little ones get tired in the afternoon and they will
be home early enough for a nap if needed.
02:54 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
starting high school later, more like what you have the middle school start time
s
02:55 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
High Schools start between 8 am and 8:30 am
m and 9 am
03:32 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
The middle school timing is too late. It would interfere with after school activ
ities
03:37 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Have middle and high schools on a more siimilar timeframe
03:43 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I don't think elementary school children should start as early at 7:50, as my ch
ild does. I think starting btwn 8:20-8:55 would be an improvement. I think the
middle schools students are getting out way too late. Starting 30 min. earlier
would be an improvement.
03:43 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
None of the age groups should go until 4:30 in the afternoon. It gets in the wa
y of homework and after school activities.
ng for elementary school students to start. Most kids get up early and by 3:00
in the afternoon they start to run out of steam. I am speaking as an elementary
school teacher (ten years).
03:51 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
The middle school start time is a little late 9:40?
04:00 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Our rising middle schooler does not qualify for bus and therefore would impact p
arents' work schedule. I'd like to see it about the high school timing.
04:03 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Secondary schools should be on the same bell schedule for the middle school -- o
therwise families will have troubles accommodating the schedule. It would be goo
d to allow secondary students an early arrival time if that worked for the famil
y. I am a single Mom and need to get to work -- the bell schedule puts me right
in the middle of the worst traffic making my commute much longer (leaving earlie
r equates to a shorter commute by even hours). My concern is to have all 3 kids
that go to the secondary school on the same schedule.
04:07 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I wish we could extend the school day by 30 minutes across the board. It would
make for easier after school care and arrangements.
04:30 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
It is too late for elementary schools to start at 9:20 a.m. They should start b
y 9:15 a.m.
04:35 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I believe that the middle and high school times should be changed. However, I d
o like the proposed bell schedule much better than the current one and would sup
port the change.
04:44 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
The high schools should start at the latest time.
09:04 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Middle School should start earlier - between 8AM and 8:30AM.
09:05 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
It is not necessary for middle schools to start so late.
09:16 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
The high school starting would be fine, but the middle school & some elementary
schools have openings that are too late. Kids have activities going on, some wel
l before 4 - 4:30. That is just not realistic in my opinion. But besides that, i
t is good.
09:20 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Middle schools start way too late, and end too late. With the buses, many middl
e school kids wouldn't get home until 5:30. No schools should be ending after 3
:45.
09:22 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Middle and high schools should start at the same time. If not possible, high sh
ould start later.
09:24 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Flip HS and MS schedules, having HS students come in last.
09:39 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
9:20 is probably too late for elementary school start. These kids are too young
to put themselves on the bus. Parents have to be able to commute to work and a
rrive by 9:00 or earlier. Elemenatry can't be the latest start.
09:41 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
The start time of 9:40 for middle school is too late.
09:42 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
high school & middle school should start between 8:00-830am
ol start 9-930am
09:52 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I believe the HS needs to end between 2:45 and 3:15 each day to accommodate afte
r school outside extracurricular during the late fall through early spring month
s.
09:55 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Later High School start times are as important as Middle School start times. Hi
gh School should not start before 9:00 a.m.
01:35 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
i didn't like the start time for elementary, too early for those age kids
04:54 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
The middle school needs to start earlier than that.
04:56 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Start at 8am would be best so after school sports activities would'nt run too la
te (and then the student would be staying up later for homework)
04:56 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I planned on going back to work once both of my kids were in school. I would ne
ed more before and after care for both of my children under the propsed schedule
. Under the current schedule, I could still make it to work at a decent hour af
ter the elementary bus comes and my oldest could baby sit until I get home. Und
er the proposed change I would now need Sacc before and after. The Sacc program
already has a long wait list ot our school.
04:57 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Middle school should start at 8:30 and get over at 3:15 and High school should s
tart at 9:20 and get over around 4.
05:00 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
For secondary schools, begin middle and high school at same time
05:07 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Don't know
05:13 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I think that high school starts way too early. Is the problem not enough buses o
r drivers? I will not have a child in HS next year but think the time needs to c
hange for the future of other students.
05:40 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Don't have them get out later than 4 in case they have a part time job, watch si
blings or do sports/scouts. By the time they get home - it's too late
05:43 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Have middle schools start and end slighter earlier than recommended above. It do
esn't leave much time for homework before sports practices, etc...
05:50 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I would have the Middle School start at 8:35 and 8:55 with the High Schools star
ting at 9:20 and 9:40.
06:32 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
ES child currently starts at 8:10 and would want him starting earlier.
07:03 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
HaVE HIGH SCHOOLS START LATEST,THEN MIDDLE SCHOOLS WITH ELEMENTARY STARTING THE
EARLIEST
07:06 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Start and end middle schools at the same time as the high schools.
07:15 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
changing the middle school time, its too late
07:16 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Is there any way to make the middle schools start around the same time as the hi
gh schools? That would be ideal. The later start time of between 8:35 and 8:55
is a good time to start.
07:37 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Starting High School twenty minutes later
08:03 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I would suggest the times between high shools and middle schools be switched wit
h each other
08:12 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I think Elementary is still too early. my son currently starts at 8:05
08:17 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Middle school should start earlier than 9:20
08:35 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
less homework so there is time for afterschool activites
08:40 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
High School and Middle school should both be from 8:35-3:45, Any later is diffic
ult with after school activities
08:44 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
school ends too late, 4 - 4:30. there are too many after school activities that
would not be available for middle schoolers
08:48 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Would prefer if high schoolers still got home before elementary schoolers
08:55 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
middle school starts too late and ends too late
08:56 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I think starting high schools between 8 & 8:30 is realistic for both bus riders
& young drivers - also, middle schools starting later than 8:45 to 9 o'clock is
too late.
10:04 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
School needs to end by 3:45 for all schools. Too many after school activities s
tart by 4PM.
10:30 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Middle school should end a little earlier
10:37 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
High school should start between 9:20 and 9:40 instead of Middle shcool
10:37 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Middle school students need to start/end earlier to account for after school act
ivities and travel home from school. Elementary schools could start a little ear
lier if needed.
10:41 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
For students who have after school sports, the end time would need to be a bit e
arlier, so the start time would have to be earlier as well.
11:01 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Middle school ends too late for after school activities
11:21 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
I think the high schools should be the latest to start
11:53 PM Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Getting out 4:30pm for middle schoolers seems really late. They would not have m
uch time for their homework. I suggest Fairfax County break up into municipalit
ies. This county is too damn large. This is absolutely crazy. Can't they bett
er break out the bus schedules by cluster? And why the heck are Langley student
s bussed in from Reston. It's insane!
05:40 AM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
I wonder, other than the reasons for transportation accommodations, why middle s
chools have to start that late. Maybe I am not understanding this proposal comp
letely, but I feel that middle school students can function around the same time
as the high school students.
07:06 AM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
High Schools should start after 9AM
08:28 AM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
middle school schedule seems to be ending very late.
08:31 AM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
This middle school start time is way too late. There would be too great an impa
ct on after school activities and adequate study time in the afternoon.
09:06 AM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
The ending time is too late. There are high school students with jobs and sports
. They need time to do homework.
09:21 AM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
Starting school after 9:00 is too late. How would after-school activities and a
ppontments fit into a child's schedule?
09:24 AM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
I think high school should start around 8:00 AM so that they are out a little ea
rlier so after school activites do not go so late into the dinner hour.
09:39 AM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
I think that the elementary and middle school start times are fine (currently).
The high school start time is absurd and needs to have a later time in that tee
nagers need the most sleep!
09:40 AM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
High School needs to start a little later but not that late because of after sch
ool activities.
10:10 AM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
Based on teenage sleep habits, latest start times should be for high school, rat
her than middle school.
10:25 AM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
I think all elementary schools should start by 9 am.
10:26 AM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
Too late for middle school students to come home. Not much time for extra activi
ties.
10:30 AM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
To have elementary school students be home after 3:15pm would make easier for me
to find someone to be home at that time.
10:56 AM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
Middle Schools starting slightly earlier, so that they have time to finish, do a
fterschool activities and homework.MIDDLE SCHOOLS NEED TO CHANGE THEIR SCHEDULES
TO ALTERNATE DAY SCHEDULES LIKE HIGH SCHOOL OTHERWISE MS STUDENTS WILL HAVE LIT
TLE TIME TO COMPLETE 7 LOTS OF HOMEWORK BEFORE THE FOLLOWING DAY.
11:10 AM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
Start middle schools with high schools, particularly when combined into secondar
y schools (Robinson).
11:11 AM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
Middle school ends too late.
11:15 AM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
school starting late is good but ending late is not really a good idea beacuse o
f afterschool activities and homework and community services
12:42 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
Later start times and buses for high school.
12:53 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
Middle school could be a little earlier or keep the same schedule we have now bu
t move everyone 30 minutes later.
03:37 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
I would like to see the early release on Mondays done away with. Very difficult
for planning when one day a week is early. Make M-F the same hours.
03:43 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
Why can't the elementary schools start earlier than 7:50 like the high and middl
e schoold do now? Bus problems?
04:19 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
Move everything up a bit -
04:58 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
change schools to include longer Mondays to be similiar to rest of the week.
05:09 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
STUDENTS BE AT SCHOOL NO LATER THAN 9:00. I THINK THEY HAVE TOO MUCH TIME UNSUP
ERVISED AS IT IS.
05:16 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
Middle school start no later than 9 AM and end no later than 4 PM
05:42 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
Shorten school hours
05:43 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
middle school and high school should have the same schedule ,and get home at the
same time
05:54 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
Earlier times for ES and later times for middle and high
06:16 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
I would prefer that High Schools start the latest because these kids could stay
home and get to school on their own.
06:17 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
Have the high schools start later than the middle schools.
06:28 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
More buses.
06:38 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
For working parents, it would be difficult to have such a late start time for mi
ddle school students. I do, however, think that the current schedule has them ge
tting on the bus MUCH too early.
06:38 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
I would like to see an earlier end time for middle school if possible
07:44 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
Start high school later.
07:55 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
middle schools starting slightly earlier and ending slightly earlier.
08:06 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
Middle School times are too late...Parents need to get to work and these kids n
eed supervision in the morning to get going...high school students might not.
08:18 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
I need either a high schooler or middle schooler to walk my youngest home, if I
am not there.
08:27 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
All MS should end no later than 4pm
08:33 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
I just think that the Middle Schools shouldn't end that late. Maybe instead of t
he ending times listed above, end the middle schools around 3:45 p.m. - 4:00 p.m
. But not after 4:00 p.m. It's too late then. Other than that, I am with complet
e agreement with the Elementary and High School start/end times. I think it's a
great idea.
08:49 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
How would sports be accomidated after school? Particularly crew when daylight
and travel to the river are a factor?
02:23 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
Although I no longer have a child currently in MS, I feel that they should get o
ut a bit earlier to accomodate extra curricular activities w/o feeling pressured
.
02:23 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
I think high schools should be latest, not middle schools
02:24 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
9:40 is too late a start time for working parents. What do other school distric
ts do?
09:06 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
Middle schools should start and end on the same schedule as the high school in t
heir area.
09:19 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
middle school starts too late. Would start around 8:30. And high school start ar
ound 8am.
09:37 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
Middle school start times after 9:20 are way too late. These students wouldn't b
e home until 5:15 using a bus.

What about after school ac ademics/sports. Practice would start later and more t
hen likely end later. It makes for a longer day for the student (especailly if t
hey are taking AP classes) and still having to do homework.
09:51 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
Would need to understand the impact on before- and after-school SACC coverage.
Somewhat concerned about middle school mornings, in particular - what time would
children be allowed to enter the school?
10:24 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
I think the elementary should start the earliest as at this age they are up earl
y anyway. But the proposal is better then the current way. My High schooler is
exhausted.
11:09 PM Wednesday, July 02, 2008
elementary schools earliest; then middle; HS starts latest
01:09 AM Thursday, July 03, 2008
switch the middle school and high school times. overall, high schoolers need mo
re sleep. and in a middle schooler's shoes, it would be great to look forward to
sleeping more the next four years, rather then sleeping less. high schoolers g
et much more homework.
03:45 AM Thursday, July 03, 2008
Middle School start time far too late. Push for start times closer to High Scho
ol times. No school should start after 9:30.
07:30 AM Thursday, July 03, 2008
While I agree that older children need rest, the younger the child, the more res
t they need. We need less sleep as we get older, and older children do afternoo
n activities, and have more homework. If they get up early, start their day, th
ey will have time for homework and activities, as they have far more homework th
an elementary aged children.
07:59 AM Thursday, July 03, 2008
I don't know how to fix it given the bus situation but my daughter wnet to a sch
ool that ends late (I consider 4 and after late) and coupled with a long bus rid
e didn't get home until nearly 5:00 pm which is very late in the day and preclud
es her from participating in many after school activities.
08:09 AM Thursday, July 03, 2008
We believe the change in start times does not need to be so large. It appears h
igh schools would start about an hour later. How about 30 minutes?
08:40 AM Thursday, July 03, 2008
I would rather see the high schools begin between 8 and 8:30 instead. Such a la
te end time precludes student work schedules as well as after school activities.
08:45 AM Thursday, July 03, 2008
I LOVE the high school start time but feel that middle school should begin earli
er than above.
09:19 AM Thursday, July 03, 2008
09:28 AM Thursday, July 03, 2008
Middle School needs to start at the same time as high school at 8:35 and 8:55A (
end 3:15-3:45P)
09:42 AM Thursday, July 03, 2008
Middle schools starting and ending earlier. A 4:30pm end time seems late to me.
09:52 AM Thursday, July 03, 2008
A middle school day ending between 4pm and 4:30 pm does not allow time for child
ren to complete homework and participate in afterschool activites such as scouti
ng, soccer, dance, etc.
10:06 AM Thursday, July 03, 2008
Middle School time should start between 8:00 - 9:00. I think 9:20 - 9:40 is too
late.
10:17 AM Thursday, July 03, 2008
It would be nice for high school to start a little later so my son could sleep a
little more but this would also impact his ability to participate in afternoon
sports since that would start later and that means he would get home later from
school, start homework later, have a harder time getting extra help from teacher
s, etc.
10:19 AM Thursday, July 03, 2008
We definitely support earlier start times for elementary schools but absolutely
DO NOT support a later start time.
10:25 AM Thursday, July 03, 2008
Reduce the start time spread between the schools. Most schools should start bet
ween 0750 and 0850.
10:31 AM Thursday, July 03, 2008
The middle school end time is too late, especially for those involved in after s
chool activities
10:53 AM Thursday, July 03, 2008
The middle school would be too late but the rest of the proposed times look okay
.
10:54 AM Thursday, July 03, 2008
8:00-3:00
10:58 AM Thursday, July 03, 2008
Elementary schools all on consistent schedule.
ting.
11:19 AM Thursday, July 03, 2008
Middle school would be getting out too late.
11:35 AM Thursday, July 03, 2008
I don't understand why middle school would start later than high school. Should
n't the start time be progressively later with age, so that HS starts the latest
?
12:06 PM Thursday, July 03, 2008
leave the elementary start times alone and have the buses do the high school rou
te after the elementary route.
12:31 PM Thursday, July 03, 2008
Middle school is starting bit late. I would like it to have schedule like high s
chool.
05:18 PM Friday, July 04, 2008
The middle school time gets out too late
07:38 PM Friday, July 04, 2008
Childcare issues that would arise...make more space in SACC
09:28 PM Friday, July 04, 2008
switch the middle and high school start times.
10:47 PM Friday, July 04, 2008
Does the time change change the total amount of time a student spends riding on
the bus. For instance, my high school student gets on the bus at 6:20 a.m. and
arrives at school around 7:05. That is a 35 minute bus ride to a school that is
2 miles away!! I would love to her bus route changed so she doesn't have to ge
t up so early and the ride time is lessened.
01:06 PM Thursday, July 03, 2008
Middle school should start by 9 am, any later and all of us working parents woul
d be in a bind.
01:06 PM Thursday, July 03, 2008
it's pretty late to be getting home between 4:30 and 5:00.
02:20 PM Thursday, July 03, 2008
I don't think children (any age) should be expected to get up and be out for bus
es that early. In the winter it is still dark outside, and many people are drivi
ng while still tired or distracted.
02:29 PM Thursday, July 03, 2008
I don't think having the elementary kids going earlier and getting home earlier
is necessarily a better option.
02:35 PM Thursday, July 03, 2008
swap middle school and high school start times
02:47 PM Thursday, July 03, 2008
high school start time 8 a.m.
tanding outside in the dark in the winter months, especially when they are the o
nly ones at the bus stop.
03:01 PM Thursday, July 03, 2008
Have the middle schools start between 8:35 and 8:55, and the highschools start b
etween 9:20 and 9:40.
03:02 PM Thursday, July 03, 2008
Later start times for high school students.
03:08 PM Thursday, July 03, 2008
I think that all school should start at 8:00
04:15 PM Thursday, July 03, 2008
Change to high school only - maybe 8:00 to 8:30 a.m. - no later.
05:32 PM Thursday, July 03, 2008
The children need to be in the school with enough time to purchase and eat their
breakfast with out inhaling the consumption!
05:59 PM Thursday, July 03, 2008
Try a middle ground, like moving the starting times back 45 min or even an hour.
Moving MS back two full hours is excessive. I don't think the kids need that,
and the 9:40 start time makes it impossible for those parents that want or need
to drive their kids in, because there are very few jobs (and none in the Federa
l government) that allow us to start work as late as 9:40.
08:29 PM Thursday, July 03, 2008
High school should also start later, e.g. 9:00 and 9:30
08:42 PM Thursday, July 03, 2008
I don't think ES should start before 8:45am or 9:00am. My son previously went to
private school and the hours were from 9:00am until 3:00pm and they had at leas
t a 30 min. lunch and at least a 20 min. recess. They barely get 10 mins for rec
ess in public school.
08:51 PM Thursday, July 03, 2008
Have high school start between 7:50-8:20 and end around 2:40 - 3:00.
11:11 PM Thursday, July 03, 2008
Middle School seems to start too late.
11:39 PM Thursday, July 03, 2008
Middle school needs to start earlier to better match the start of parent work ti
mes.
08:34 AM Friday, July 04, 2008
I think the elementary start time would be too early. My children currently cat
ch the bus at 7:45 for an 8:20 start. A 7:15 bus time would be way too early, e
specially during the winter time when they'd be at the bus stop in the dark.
09:19 AM Friday, July 04, 2008
HS should go back to a 6-period day, and get out earlier. With afternoon sports/
activities, the later start would make the day go way too late. Proposed changes
for ES and MS are good.
10:37 AM Friday, July 04, 2008
I would have the middle school start at a later time than now but an earlier tim
e than in the proposed schedule. Starting around 9:30 is way too late and would
give the children no time to do homework, participate in afterschool activities
, etc. The current start time, however, provides them with too little sleep.
11:17 AM Friday, July 04, 2008
I think you need community input instead of imposing a blanket solution on the f
amilies. Otherwise, no matter how "good" your solution, unless you communicate
it clearly and why you made choices, it will also allow you to consider choices
that may not be obvious from your point of view but would satisfy both neighborh
ood and transportation needs.
11:30 AM Friday, July 04, 2008
The middle school end time is too late
01:35 PM Friday, July 04, 2008
Middle Schools and Hight Schools start between 8:35am and 8:55 is better.
02:54 PM Friday, July 04, 2008
It's fine, but the later the better for high school kids
08:16 AM Saturday, July 05, 2008
The Middle School time ends WAY TOO LATE. That would cause major conflicts with
after school events.
08:37 AM Saturday, July 05, 2008
I think the older they are the more the can handle getting out later. Middle sc
hool ending at 4:30 seems too late.
08:52 AM Saturday, July 05, 2008
The middle school schedule is just too late, for children riding buses they woul
d not get home until 5 pm or later.
01:35 PM Saturday, July 05, 2008
Switch high school and middle school start times: high school to start 9:20-9:4
0;p middle school to start 8:35-8:55.
06:01 PM Saturday, July 05, 2008
Too late middle school start for working parents that have to stay home until bu
s picks up since there is no SACC in middle school
06:50 PM Saturday, July 05, 2008
Would still like a later start time
07:57 PM Saturday, July 05, 2008
It would be detrimental to my daughter in Middle School to get home at 4pm. She
needs the time between 3 & 4 to do homework before after school activities. Al
though, she would benefit from the sleep in the morning, I don't like the late t
ime in the afternoon.
09:16 PM Saturday, July 05, 2008
DON'T START ELEMENTARY BEFORE 8:20
09:45 PM Saturday, July 05, 2008
I think elementary schools should start between 7:20 and 8:20, High schools shou
ld start between 8:05 and 8:25 and Middle Schools should start between 9:20 and
9:40
10:15 PM Saturday, July 05, 2008
I think there is a lot of non-productive time included in the daily schedules of
some students. I think the system should be more flexible, allowing students w
ho have completed their core classes to leave the campus with parental consent,
rather than have to stay in school becaused of scheduling issues - ie. TA's
10:42 PM Saturday, July 05, 2008
Middle Scool starts too late, but I realize it's hard due to bus tranportation.
11:16 PM Saturday, July 05, 2008
Middle School would be starting too late; I would suggest stating Middle School
no later than 9 am.
09:05 AM Sunday, July 06, 2008
I understand that all schedules revolve around transportation. I think high sch
ools and middle schools start too early and should start later; however, this wo
uld impact elementary schools by starting earlier. That in itself is not the pr
oblem. But in doing so, you have the same issue with early pick ups as you do n
ow with high school and middle school students. Younger students need their sle
ep as they are developing just as much as older students do as they are approach
ing/going through puberty. I don't think elementary students should be waiting
for a school bus at such an early hour when it is dark outside. Then again, may
be it is not safe for the older students either. I think this is a HUGE concern
overall. I am not sure what the answer is but it seems that the start times by
level (elementary, middle, and high) are at the mercy of the buses. Another note
- many high school students have jobs after school. Getting out later would re
sult in loss of jobs or less hours on the job.
11:24 AM Sunday, July 06, 2008
Middle schools should start and end slightly earlier; the proposal is too late f
or middle schools
11:52 AM Sunday, July 06, 2008
I like the fact that the middle schools and high schools end first so that my ol
der son can pick up my younger son at elementary school. If you move middle sch
ool and high school later, you should also move elementary school later to end s
hortly after.
03:24 PM Sunday, July 06, 2008
Middle schools should start later than 7:20, as my son's currently does. Howeve
r, I think that 9:20 is too late.
03:28 PM Sunday, July 06, 2008
Middle school should start earlier, between 8:50 and 9:20, to allow the return f
rom school to be earlier. Since we do not have athletic programs in our county t
he students need time to eat, do homework prior to the evening carpool to variou
s schools across the county for athletic practice. Arriving home at 4:30 allows
little time to transition for extra curriculars.
03:39 PM Sunday, July 06, 2008
Start school later than it is now, but not as late as you have it.
07:30 PM Sunday, July 06, 2008
Make high schools start even later, not before 9:30
07:49 PM Sunday, July 06, 2008
I think Middle school should start around the same time as high school. Both my
older children start within 5 or 10 minutes of each other and arrive home about
20 minutes apart. I don't like an arrival home time after 3:45 - most aftersch
ool activities (music, sports, etc.) start around 4:00pm. This would push back
a lot of activities ending later in the evening with a later meal schedule. I d
on't like the early start time at 7:20, but if there is someway to come halfway
and have the high and middle school students start and finish times fairly close
together, that would be better.
07:50 PM Sunday, July 06, 2008
both high school and middle school start later.
09:13 PM Sunday, July 06, 2008
The start and end times of the elementary schools should be more consistent.
