Have the middle schools start between 8:35 and 8:55 instead of the high schools

11:04 AM Friday, May 30, 2008

Middle school starts too late. It should start at 8:35 and high school should b e later.

12:05 PM Friday, May 30, 2008

The elementary schedule is ok but the middle school is starting too late. I wou ldn't have any before school supervision for my son, since I have to be at work in Washington, D.C., by 9:00 a.m. If the middle schools could start about 30-45 minutes earlier, that would be great. If that's not possible, provide some kind of before school supervision.

12:18 PM Friday, May 30, 2008

Middle School start earlier

12:29 PM Friday, May 30, 2008

It is too late of a start for middle school in my opinion. I would switch the mi ddle school time with the elementary school start time

12:34 PM Friday, May 30, 2008

Look at decreasing teh number of buses used. Perhaps make busing an optional pa id serive(income based with subsidies for low in come families)

01:19 PM Friday, May 30, 2008

Can't we start elementary earlier and get the middle schoolers in and out of sc hool earlier? My elementary kids can and do get up earlier than school starts a lready.

01:44 PM Friday, May 30, 2008

The elementary start time is too early. High schools and middle schools could b e pushed back to between 8 and 8:30 but to expect little ones to forgo sleep (re search shows they need 10 hours at night)because parents no longer enforce bedti mes for their children beginning at a young age and then have problems when they have to get up early in high school is unreasonable. I, too, had to get up by 6:30 to get to school before 8 (and I went to a Catholic school that had not bus ing and was a 15-20 minute drive) and I survived because my parents consistently enforced a lights out time in my house. My husband had 6 am band practice when he was in high school and he was not falling asleep in class. There is a cultu re of permissiveness with parents in regard to letting children stay up late to watch TV or spend time on the internet (I speak as former middle school teacher who saw this with a lot of my students)and parents need to realize that they are not doing their children any favors. I also think that the hardship this may b e for families who rely on older children for childcare or for students who need to work after school because they are not as affluent as other FAirfax County c hildren needs to be considered.

01:48 PM Friday, May 30, 2008

Middle schools..keep close to High Schools earlier lots of after school stuff go ing on need time to do homework and wind down before sports

06:30 PM Saturday, May 31, 2008

I would prefer elementary schools start between 8:35 am and 8:55 am also.

08:09 PM Saturday, May 31, 2008

later hs start time ms earlier

10:32 PM Saturday, May 31, 2008

Elementary schools to start no later than 8:30.

10:43 PM Saturday, May 31, 2008

I don't like that some would start at 9:20 and end at 4:00. It is too much of a discrepency within elementary schools.

10:46 PM Saturday, May 31, 2008

have the middle schools start earlier than the high schools

11:53 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

High schools starting after middle school (switch high school and middle school) .

01:51 PM Friday, May 30, 2008

I would switch the middle and high school start times.

01:56 PM Friday, May 30, 2008

Middle School should start earlier than high school.

02:03 PM Friday, May 30, 2008

It would be better if middle schools could start earlier---between 8:45-9:15. 9 :40 is late.

02:09 PM Friday, May 30, 2008

starting most elementary schools closer to 8:55 rather than 7:50

02:31 PM Friday, May 30, 2008

High school 8;35-8:55, Middle school 7:50-8:55, Elementary 9:20 -9:40

02:49 PM Friday, May 30, 2008

High school still seems early. Why not switch new middle school & new high schoo l hours?

02:52 PM Friday, May 30, 2008

Middle schools should start around 9:00 a.m.

03:46 PM Friday, May 30, 2008

It is too late

05:10 PM Friday, May 30, 2008

As a parent of elementary school-aged children at a school that starts at 8:50AM and where my children are getting home around 4PM anyway, it's not clear how th is change would make any difference to our family. I think it would be better i f the classes started closer to 8 or as late as 8:30.

06:20 PM Friday, May 30, 2008

middle schools starting closer to 9:15 than 9:40

06:39 PM Friday, May 30, 2008

Middle school should start no later than 9:30

07:37 PM Friday, May 30, 2008

Middle schools ending at 4:30 would NOT be good because of after school sports a nd games in the spring. 4PM would be the latest that I would like any level scho ol end.

08:08 PM Friday, May 30, 2008

Elem starts first; Middle School starts second; HS starts latest.

08:09 PM Friday, May 30, 2008

I would like to see all schools start later. My youngest has a really hard time getting up in the morning. Her best schedule would be going to school at 10am. My oldest started going to bed later and later. She physically can't get to s leep before 11pm and I have to drag her out of bed. Sometimes she's late and do esn't get breakfast before her ride arrives. Only one of my children is an "ear ly to bed, early to rise" student. My youngest is so tired that she still takes naps afterschool almost everyday.

09:37 PM Friday, May 30, 2008

That middle school start a little earlier if possible (maybe between 8:45 and 9: 15)

09:51 PM Friday, May 30, 2008

Start middle schools before 9:20 so parents who work in DC can get to work at a reasonable time.

05:52 AM Saturday, May 31, 2008

More Buses! Class starting after 8:30 is unacceptable. We are the United State s of America! Where are our priorities? These children are our future! Perhaps the problem isnt more buses, but the design of the boundaries of the elementary schools... there should be more walkers to these schools. Are they truly neigh borhood schools? Perhaps those that are pupil placed should not be eligible for busing. Perhaps smaller buses should be used for special services... like GT p ick up routes... etc. Each Cluster should have the same start times at each lev el because parents will have students at multiple grade levels and have to accom odate the schedule... as will the corresponding community afterschool programs.

07:27 AM Saturday, May 31, 2008

Elementary school should start earlier than 7:50. It is easier to get a younger child on a earlier bedtime routine to get up earlier.

11:52 AM Saturday, May 31, 2008

I do not like middle school starting so late. I'd rather have them starting in the earlier time slot, even as early as 7:15, as the currently are. For that re ason, I actually prefer the current schedule to this but was not able to select that answer.

02:44 PM Saturday, May 31, 2008

Why not have the high schools start the latest, then the middle schools, then th e elementary, since apparently it's the older kids who need to sleep later?

04:51 PM Saturday, May 31, 2008

I think keeping kids in school until 4:30 pm is a little too late in the afterno on. Perhaps the schedules could be shifted so that EVERYONE was finished by 4pm.

11:31 PM Saturday, May 31, 2008

I wish Haycock started earlier. If high school ends at 4 pm, when do athletes g et home from games? 9 pm? This seems too late given the after-school commitmen ts of most high school students, which means the early start time is appropriate . Can't students go to bed earlier?

11:01 AM Sunday, June 01, 2008

That is too late for high school students who often have extra-curriculars after school.

06:46 PM Sunday, June 01, 2008

High School should be latest to start

07:17 PM Sunday, June 01, 2008

I would support making all the start times a little later, not earlier.

07:58 PM Sunday, June 01, 2008

middle school gets out too late - would be harder to after school activities eit her in school or in community

09:12 PM Sunday, June 01, 2008

Consitancy, get up and go, leave school earlier in the day to give the children a break and more time for homework.

07:30 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

How about an early class for those HS that want to start early? They would be r esponsible for their own transportation.

08:39 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

I don't think that any schools should end after 4p.m., especially elementary sch ools. One of my sons does not get home until after 4. My son is in the GT prog ram, but I believe that after-school activities are important for a well-balance d child. When he has an after school activity (generally baseball), it is hard f or him to get his homework done. Practice/games start almost as soon as he gets home and then by the time he takes a shower, eats, etc. it is late. There has been times when he has been up until 10 p.m. doing homework (he works slower whe n he is tired). That 45 minutes to an hour in the afternoon makes a big differe nce.

09:12 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

I would prefer switching middle and high school times so my elementary school st udent and middle school student times were within 1 hour of each other for coord inating overall schedules with our work schedules. This way we could see them o ff to school and hire afterschool care for them. I could see high schoool stude nts getting themselves ready in the morning. Anything is preferable to middle a nd high school students getting on the bus before 7AM though. However, I am not sure how high school sports would be affected.

09:15 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

Start the elementary schools later.

09:17 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

Buy more buses so this is not the main constraint.

09:18 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

I am concerned on how this will affect the hours and cost of the after care pro gram.

09:23 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

Regarding Middle School; later than it is currently but not as late as the Trans portation Task Force suggests

09:26 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

The Middle School start time is too late for working parents

09:45 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

Start and end high school and middle school at the same time if they are in the same school pyramid.

09:47 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

I think the middle schoolers need to start before 9am. Most children are up and ready to get started before 9. I think 8:30 is a better time. I don't like the 6 am bus pick up. I think it's too dark in the morning for the children to be wait ing or walking to bus stops.

10:03 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

The Middle School schedule ends way too late in the day and kids would probably be too tired for their afternoon classes. It would be preferable to swap the Mi ddle School and High School schedules.

10:04 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

I think the middle school kids getting out at 4:30 is too late for after school activities. I also think the start time for some elementary schools at 9:20am i s way too late for working parents to schedule around.

10:06 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

I believe high schools should start at the latest possible time, due to heavier schoolwork load and busier schedules for students at that level of schooling.

10:13 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

Times starts/ends for ES, MS and HS in the same pyramid should be scheduled appr opriately to minimize the duration of time getting children off to school and re ceiving them home...i.e. if I have one leave at 6am and the other doesn't leave until 8am...makes the morning and/or afternoon a continuous/lengthy time managem ent nightmare.

10:15 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

Can Middle School start closer to 9:00?

10:28 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

i think High School should start at or after 9. it is much too hard on these te ens to awaken so early for classes.

10:34 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

Middle Schools start to late.

10:37 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

The middle school kids need to get out of school earlier than 4 - 4:30 p.m. The y have a lot of after school activities, and they would have a very late night i f the school day were delayed that much.

10:39 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

The Middle Schools start at 9:20 is too late. This late start is very inconveni ent to parents working full-time.

10:54 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

The latest start and end times for middle school are a little later than I'd lik e. The earliest start times for elementary are a little earlier than I'd like- but if only way to move up start times for older students then we could adjust.

10:54 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

end times are too late for High School (think after school activities-sports) an d Middle School start and end time is too late (think homework and after schol a ctivities).

10:58 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

Middle school needs to end earlier, as after school activities would be unbeliev eable late in the day.

11:03 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

Have the elementary schools start later

11:07 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

4:30 is too late. 4:00 pm would be best so that they have time to do homework a nd still be able to do extracurricular activites.

11:10 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

Middle Schools that end around 4:30 would not allow students to get home in time for homework to be completed before dinner and after-school activities (especia lly if the students stays after school for teacher's assistance).

11:16 AM Monday, June 02, 2008

The middle school schedule seems too late.

12:04 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

I would prefer the Middle School schedule to be somewhere in the 8:30 - 3:00 tim eframe.

12:13 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

Elementary school kids need their sleep too!

05:53 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

For students that attend Secondary schools, it does not affect them such as my c hildren. That needs to be a factor.

06:02 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

Begin no later than 8:20. My concern is after-school activities (drama, sports, etc)if school releases as late s 3:45 and the subsequent impact on homework.

06:06 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

The biggest improvement would be to leave it as is.

06:14 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

Slightly earlier start and dismissal times for middle school, i.e. 9 am to 3:45 or 4 pm

04:03 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I think HS ending at 4:00 would have problems with team practices running later.

04:08 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I think the high schoolers need the most sleep and should start school the lates t. Have clubs, teams, etc. meet BEFORE school for those motivated to join.

12:28 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

Middle schools should start earlier, about the same as high schools.

12:30 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

I would like Middle school and High school to get out as late as possible as I/w e work full time. It would also be great to have SACC at the Middle and High Sch ool level.

12:44 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

There's the difficulty re: scheduling after school activities so that they end a t a reasonable time in the afternoon or evening.

12:44 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

I would prefer if the middle school times could start/end earlier because it is difficult for parents who want to see their chiildren off in the morning to wait until 9:20 and then go into Washington (or wherever) to start work. I do like that they would stay later, though, as that minimizes time for kids to get into trouble or otherwise be vulnerable after school. Perhaps the middle schools cou ld offer clubs or activities for 30-45 minutes in the mornings.

01:10 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

I am concerned about the effect on high school sports schedules and significant guidance should be directed to the coaches to maximize practice time after schoo l. The challenge to limits per day is it doesn't take into account weather or of f-site practices where transportation to a practice venue is needed. Perhaps li mit weekly practice hours and allow the coach to decide the best use of that tim e.

01:28 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

start time for afternoon elementary students prevents participation in community preschool programs

01:34 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

High school start times in the latest time block (9:20-9:40)

02:10 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

Middle schoolers getting out of school at 4:30 means bus riders wouldn't arrive home until after 5:00. If they participate in sports, they will be late to prac tices and games by the time they get home, get changed, and transport to the pra ctice/game location. Kids that play sports are less likely to get into trouble, and middle school is the worst time to be taking kids (especially boys) away fr om (or making them late to) important extra curricular activities that could sha pe them for life.

02:21 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

I only like the later high school and middle school schedule better. Elementary school star time should stay consistent with what it is today.

02:32 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

middle school is too late and ends too late. perhaps the county should consider a division to relieve strain on bus routes.

03:04 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

Have Middle School start at a more reasonable time. High School should start bef ore elementary schools. I would not have elementary school start before 8 am it is too early for the younger kids.

03:11 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

I WOULD MOVE HIGH SCHOOLS EARLIER (LIKE 8:00-8:15) AND MIDDLE TO ABOUT 9:00.

03:14 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

Elementary students need the most sleep & shouldn't start sooner than middle & h ighschool children. If a child is in middle school & highschool, after school a ctivities will go too late, causing dinners to be too late and they will only go to bed later!

03:17 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

Since my kids are so close in age, I prefer high school and middle school starti ng/ending times closer together as they are now. But I do support them starting later, definitely

03:37 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

middle school need to start before 9am too.

03:59 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

Move High Schools ahead 1 hour only with pick ups starting around 7am and school starting at 8:20am

04:24 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

Dp not change schedule - 4:30 is way too late for kids to be getting out of scho ol, especially if they have a lot of homework and they are active outside of sch ool

04:31 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

No student should start school after 9:00. Recommend matching the Middle School and High School schedules.

04:34 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

releasing at 4:30 is rather late, hire more buses. 4 would be the latest time I' d choose. Also do not release early on Mondays. That saves money and the childre n would have more time off during winter and spring breaks. The school year coul d end earlier also.

05:12 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

I think it is better for the older kids. But a later start time for elementary s tudents would not be good since the younger ones usually get up earlier but tire way before a 4pm dismissal.

06:46 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

After school activities would be pushed too late and that would cut in to family /study time.

06:58 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

High school should start the latest.

07:18 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

I think the middle school start time is late; many middle school kids help out w ith younger siblings after school -- if they get home afterward, they can't help . My daughter attends a secondary school -- would the middle school start time be the same as the high school (that is what we like now).

07:35 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

High School start time is much better but Middle School start time is pretty lat e

08:12 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

I think middle school is starting and finishing a little too late.

08:23 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

It doesn't address Secondary Schools which is what my elementary school feeds in to.

08:37 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

Switch the middle school and high school start times - that way - children are g radually introduced to the later start times...not back and forth. Also - marke ting SLEEP to children - is probably the best way to SOLVE the issue of kids not being awake in the morning. When parents don't provide oversight and ensure, c onsistently, that their children are in bed...of course, they will stay up later and later and later - till they begin skipping school because they are too tire d to get up.

08:44 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

high schoolers to start at 8 am and finish3pm

08:55 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

stagger start times from early to late....elementary, then middle school, then h igh school...NOT ES then HS then MS!

08:56 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

I would like to see the elementary and middle school schedule switched. Thus el ementary starting the latest. Primarily due to the ending time.

08:57 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

Elementary should all start before 9:00, MS and HS start after 9:00 but still en d before 4pm

08:59 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

The problem is when students do sports they will practice so late by getting out around 4. I think there has to be a rule stating if the change is made in coac hes cannot keep kids past 9pm.

09:05 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

like the schedules aligned, especially at Hayfield MS and HS because I will have a teenager in MS and HS.

09:09 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

active middle schoolers will find it hard to do their activities and get homewor k done. In our case, jazz band could get out at 6:00, and basketball runs from 6-9:30 including driving. I don't know what to suggest. More sports offered at school???

09:57 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

I'd like to see it elementary schools start last and high schools first but just not as early as currently.

10:07 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

Start middle school earlier than

10:09 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

it seems that it is the high school that should be starting the latest since the y are at the age that their sleep rhythms involve sleeping later; however, perha ps there is a problem that most need to be at jobs after school

10:10 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

Start middle schools earlier so that kids can still do afterschool activities be fore dark, especially in the winter. Charge a nominal fee for bus riders if nec essary.

10:11 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

We would have to understand the issues around after school activities.

10:14 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

HIGH schools should start LAST, after middle schools. Greensboro, NC, starts ES first, then middle then HS.

11:44 PM Monday, June 02, 2008

This isn't logistically possible, but if all schools could start between 8 and 8 :30, that would be perfect.

05:29 AM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

HS 8-8:30

07:01 AM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

If a child participates in after school activities they won't get home until lat er than they do already. If the end time was closer to the 3pm - it would not b e so bad.

08:17 AM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Middle/High School end time extension that late would have a tremendous impactin g on afternoon/evening activities, completing homework and attending family fun ctions. Kids would stay up even later thinking they could sleep later. It is w hat you make it. It applies to both students and working adults. If you start school or work at a certain time, you need to plan your schedule around that tim e. Whether school starts at 07:20 or 08:35, kids still may not get enough sleep during the week at their own doing.

08:37 AM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

It wlll be difficult for middle school students to participate in after school a ctivities and sports.

09:12 AM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

The start/finish time needs to be moved back a bit but not this much. High scho ol kids should start around 8 (with bus pick up not before 7) and end around 3. Middle schools should start around 8:30 and end around 8:30. With elementary k ids, it almost doesn't matter because they are not up until after midnight tryin g to complete homework and participate in after school activities.

09:27 AM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Too late of a start for middle school.

09:28 AM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I think highs chools should start at 8; middle s:30; elementary school at 9

09:32 AM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Start and end a little earlier

09:48 AM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Ending as late as 4:30 could preempt participation in some after-school activiti es. That could be tweaked some, perhaps by shortening classes by as little as 5 minutes per class.

09:52 AM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Ending as late as 4:30 seems tough given the homework they need to accomplish

10:01 AM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

High School and middle school can start at 8:35 and 8:55.

10:14 AM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I think the proposed schedule is a big improvement and would support it, I would recommend switching the Middle School and High School proposed changes though h aving High School start latest - the only negative impact would be High School s ports practice schedules.

10:17 AM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I don't like the idea of my Middle School chile, home alone in the mornings. I w ork full time. Would the Middle Schools have some sort of morning program?

10:28 AM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Most middle school students rely on youth boys & girls clubs to participate in s ports. If a child plays a sport in the fall, most kids won't get home from scho ol in time to make it to their practices. With an epidemic of obesity in US kid s, I feel we should encourage them and their parents to let them play sports. T hose kids coming from working families (single parents and two-income families) are usually stressed enough with trying to get their kids fed, homework done and to their practice by 5:30/6:00pm. Add now to this the fact that their school b us may not be back until 5:00pm or later. When will these kids get their homewo rk done? I just don’t see them getting extra sleep with later start times becau se now they will be staying up later to eat dinner and get their homework done.

10:54 AM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I believe the high school students should start the latest so they would have th e opportunity to begin their day when they are most alert and ready to absorb th e information presented, especially in their first class of the day.

10:58 AM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Would not want middle school to start any later than 9:00 or 9:10

11:02 AM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Elementary schools start around 8:30 uniformly. The middle school needs to star t little earlier than the recommended above. Preferably between 8:30 and 9:00 a m.

11:21 AM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Middle school would get out late for after school activities. Example, some trav el and rec soccer/lacrosse/field hockey practices start at 4:30. Later start tim es for rec activities may put a strain on Parks and school sites and not allow a s may teams to participate.

12:02 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

The times for the middle school.

12:03 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I very much like the later time schedules. Our kids do not get enough sleep!

12:16 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

The whole purpose of this was to have the HS start time later. Why not make it t he latest instead of the Middle School. For any of the age groups, I think endin g after 4 is too late!!

12:17 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Elementary schools should start the latest time and end the latest time.

12:25 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

That high school would have the latest start time, not middle school

12:33 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I believe a start time of 8:35 is TOO late to start school. It looks like the w hole problem is when the bus picks up the 1st group at 6:00 AM. Is zoning the i ssue? We live close to the school; in fact he walks. If the kids live almost a nd hour and a half away to make the trip, something needs to be adjusted or mayb e we need more schools to accomodate kids within the area they live. Looks like we are punishing the kids to get up early so that they can be transported so fa r away from their home.

01:06 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

The starting time for middle school is too late. I would suggest 9am the latest possible.

01:30 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Some parents may have trouble with elementary school start times being later; ma ybe have space in schools for early drop-off.

02:01 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I don't see the need for middle school students to start later than HS students. As far as transportation issues for those schools that serve both middle and HS students (such as Hayfield) a start time of 8:30 to 9:00 would be a huge improv ement for both age groups, and would not necessitate the need for multiple picku p times in the same neighborhoods.

02:02 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I think after school activities would end too late with a 4:30 end time for midd le school students

02:28 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Start H.S. later than M.S.

02:36 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Middle school is starting too late. What are working parents supposed to do wit h their middle schoolers in the mornings before school starts?

02:36 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I think that the high schools should start the latest. My two High school stude nts are loaded down with homework from multiple AP classes and need the extra sl eep in the morning to make up for the sleep they miss at night doing their homew ork.

02:37 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I would not like ES to start at the later time. I would like all ES schools to start at the earlier time.

02:42 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

My kids will all go to Robinson for middle/high school...I would prefer them to be on the same bell schedule.

03:20 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

It would be ideal if start times don't go later than 9:00

03:25 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Don't start Middle school so late, Invest some money so the schools can run on b etter schedules

03:35 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Earlier middle school - middle school and high school on same schedule (which is what we currently have). I would suggest 8:20-3 pm as good school times. 4 pm is too late for school to be ending.

03:40 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Earlier Middle school start, but not as early as now. 8:00 would be about right for MS and HS. 8:30 ES

03:41 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

High school should have the latest start time as these students need the most sl eep -- my 10th grader (not in FCPS) is up until midnight most nights trying to f inish all of her homework!

03:43 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

The elementary school kids also need mroe sleep, so starting those the same time /earlier does not help. I would like to see the elementary start later as well.

03:45 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

The middle school start and end time is too late to accomodate any after school activities/sports.

03:46 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

My concern is most working parents leave the house prior to 8:30 am, and I am no t sure what that would do to unsupervised middle schoolers.

03:51 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

The proposed changed to the MS schedule has school starting too late and ending too late--particularly if they end at 4:30...they wouldn't get home until 5 or l ater in many cases. It makes for a very long day...and when they get home they have no time to breath before sports, scouts, music, dinner and homework.

03:52 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I think the 9:20am start for elementary is too late. Start time should be no la ter 8:30 since 9:20 would conflict with a lot of parent's morning work schedules .

03:55 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

starting elem. school at 9:20 and getting out at 4pm is too late. All other time s are a great improvement.

03:55 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Middle school should start at the same time it does now at about 8 AM.

03:55 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

MS Start 8:00 to 8:30

04:02 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I believe middle and high school students should be in school a little less time then the elementary school aged children, since most of them help provide care for their younger siblings. It would help families out, if elementary school kid s went in earlier and got out later then them.

04:10 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I think the middle school ends too late at 4:30pm. this would not allow for chil dren to have after school activities either at school or outside of the school. I think that a 3:30pm end time would be more appropriate and allow for them to h ave after school time.

06:07 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

better timing for middle school, should start before 9 and end before 4

06:09 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Start a bit earlier - say 8:00 - 3:00

06:11 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

My biggest concern is that no child should be returning home as late as 4 pm - 4 :30 pm. In the proposed scenario, middle school would get home too late.

06:15 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

It makes it difficult for after schol help and after school sports on the same d ay

06:19 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

The middle school children under this plan are staying in school too late

06:29 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I think the proposed Middle School release time is too late. I would start the Middle Schools a tad earlier and release them a tad earlier

06:35 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Middle school start/end times are too late. Elementary schools should have the l atest starts/ends.

06:46 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

The Middle and High Schools should start between 7:20 and 8 a.m but the students should be dismissed between 2-2:30 p.m. so they have enough time to finish thei r work and go to bed early.

04:11 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Middle school schedule is too late and would prevent me from being home to put s tudent on the bus. (Both parents work outside the home.)

04:11 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Switch the middle school and High school times on the proposed schedule so the h igh school goes latest in the morning, the middle schools are in the middle and elementary start the earliest.

04:20 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Trying to work the transportation so that MS students don't start too late. Why can't they combine HS and MS bus stops, especially in McLean since the MS and H S are so close.

04:27 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

The middle schools are starting too late.

04:29 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Seems like middle school would end a little too late. For middle schools at same location as high schools, would be great to have the same schedule as the propo sed later high school schedule.

04:30 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

What do you do with a middle school student in the morning if school starts at 9 :40?????

04:30 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Middle schools should start earlier - 4:30 does not leave enough time for homewo rk

04:32 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Push all school start times back by a half hour, and continue to leave high scho ol start times first, followed by middle and elementary schools.

04:34 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Middle School is too late. With two in elementary, my 6th grader already spends at times 2-3 hrs. on homework. If he didn't get home until 4:30 that would be insane! Start elementary even earlier.

04:35 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Elementary schools not starting before 8:00

04:37 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Elementary Schools should start later, around 8:30am - 9:15am. Middle Schools c ould start 9:15 - 9:35am. High Schools could start from 9:20 - 9:40 Younger chi ldren need more time to sleep than older children, but need to get to school in time for parents to go to work. Older children (MS & HS) can be left at home to catch the bus on their own, so they can go in later and get more sleep.

04:38 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

The middle school children get out too late.

04:44 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I think High school & elementary should change, middle stays as it is..if possib le..otherwise I support a complete change

04:51 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Both Middle School and High School should start between 8:00 and 8:30

04:56 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

My family would have trouble with a school day ending at 4:30 because that would leave so little time between school and other activities (particularly religiou s school, whose schedule is not likely to be adjusted along with the fcps).

05:00 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I think High Schoolers could benefit the most from starting the lastest, not mid dle schoolers.

05:01 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Middle schools start earlier between 8:00 am and 9:00 am is a good time that way they have enough time for homework in the evenings

05:04 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I would hate to see any school day end later than 3:45. It would interfere with after school activities.

05:11 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Middle school starts too late. Move it up 30 minutes.

05:14 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

need to make time for sports and after school activities

05:32 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Middle School time should start earlier.

05:40 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

My major concern would be for afterschool sports and how they would be able to h andle/schedule the later start for practices and games. Perhaps an 8:00 - 8:30 High School start so they'd end earlier, yet have the benefit of getting a littl e bit more sleep in the morning.

05:46 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Somehow make middle school begin a little earlier

05:52 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I believe high schoolers tend to need to sleep later than middle schoolers, so I do not understand why middle schools would begin later than high schools...?

05:55 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

middle school ends really late

05:59 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

The middle school start times seem too late for me. I would have to leave my mi ddle school children home alone for a while when I leave for work

07:19 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I think you are now starting the HS a little too late and definitely staring the middle schools too late.

07:39 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

All schools should start early. Most afterschool activities start between 5 and 6 pm, and the kids need time to do homework. If the middle schoolers aren't ge tting out until 4:30, there's very little time for homework before activities.

07:41 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

If you work, elementary schools starting later than 8:30 is difficult. Will addi tional SACC space be provided?

07:52 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

let them sleep more in the morning please.

08:07 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

We believe the middle school starting and ending bells are too late in the trans portation task force's proposed scenario.

08:07 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

suggest having middle school start a little earlier than high school. i.e - rev erse the middle school and high school bell proposal

08:26 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

It seems like the middle school start times are too late, but I guess I would ne ed to see the actual bus schedule to see when they would get picked up...it may just be a perceptual thing. The time might be fine. I am on the fence.

08:34 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Don't start Middle School so late, if possible. They would get home too late, e specially if there are after-school activities.

08:41 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

buy more busses or elementary and middle could both stager start tiems

08:42 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Middle school students start closer to 8am

08:50 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Figure out a way to have middle school not end so late in the afternoon

08:51 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

High school and middle schools start earlier, some elementary schools start late r.

08:52 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I would have MS start before HS.

08:57 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I would hate to see ANY elementary school starting after 9:00 a.m.!

09:01 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

The middles school times leave no room for after-school activities. I would pre fer they all be done y 4:00. Elementary schools starting at 9:20 is too late.

09:12 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I think starting the elementary schools around 8:00 is good because most young c hildren are up early and too much free time in the morning before school isn't g ood. Also, they have homework and it is better that they get out at 3:00 so they have time to do their homework and maybe an extracurricular activity after home work. I think the high schools and middle schools start too early, especially s ince the kids have soooo much homework and are encouraged to do so many extracur ricular activities. These children should not be waiting out in the dark mornin gs for the bus, especially if they are alone. As far as the homework, I think t he kids, including elementary, have more than they need. I've seen high school students work constantly and late into the night and then not get into the colle ge that they were hoping for even though they had fantastic grades and extra act ivities. Sometimes, these older kids are going through the motions of homework and not retaining the material, mostly because they are so tired. If they had l ess homework, they wouldn't be up as late and then they wouldn't be as tired the next day.

09:13 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Shift the MOST to SOME elementary schools start... 8am

09:13 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

9:20 is too late for elementary students to start. It makes the evening hours r ushed. It's very hard to sit down, as a family, to dinner when you have to do i t soon after the kids get off the bus, especially if there's a sports practice o r game to get to, as well.

09:39 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Middle schools should start around 8:30 and leave around 3:30pm

09:40 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Start elementary school a little earlier so middle schoolers could start a littl e earlier - all by 9:00

09:51 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Middle school start time seems a bit too late.

09:54 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

start/end middle school no later than 9

10:05 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I think it is ok for middle and high to start and end at the same time. Also, t here should be some consideration for homework after school and after school act ivities

10:16 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I think High School should start 0750-0855; Middle School 0835-0855 and Elementa ry school last 0920 -0940

10:18 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Start middle school earlier

10:24 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

High schools should start latest. Over time, students will work around this for after-school events. Arguments saying this is a Big Issue are, quite simply, fla wed.

10:27 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I think it is late to have middle school end at 4-4:30 pm. You have to think of extra curricular activites, like sports, band, etc. I just have elementary sch ool kids right now so I don't know how it works in junior high. Also they have m ore homework in jr. high than elementary school and sometimes it is a struggle f or us just to get through our homework and we hardly have any right now. It is hard because my kids are active in sports and cub scouts and girls scouts.

10:34 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Prefer between 8:30-9:00am start time for middle school.

10:37 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

No elementary school student should be in school until 4 pm. My son has been do ing that this year, and by the time he gets home on the bus it's 4:45 since his bus is the last one in line at his school. There is no time for him to play and relax, especially if he plays any type of organized sporting activity. If you revise the schedule, the elementary schools should all be early start and early dismissal.

10:56 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

the middle school start time is so late it will be difficult for working parents . Can middle and HS times be switched? It's easier for a HS kid to get to the b us stop/school on his/her own than it is for middle schoolers (mine is 12 and th e bus stop is more than 1/2 a mile away.)

11:16 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

it would be nice if middle school wasn't so late, the elementary schools aren't that late now, why force the middle schools to run that late?

11:38 PM Tuesday, June 03, 2008

The Middle School should start between 8:00 and 9:00. The High School should sta rt around 8:00 and the Elementary Schools should start between 8:30 and 9:00.

04:31 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

middle school should end by 4pm.

06:02 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle School should start and end earlier. (they have many extra- curricular ac tivities)

06:52 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Having elementary schools start earleier and the high schools between 8:15 and 8 :45

06:57 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle school starting at 9:20 is too late for single parents who have to get to work.

07:02 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I think the middle school end time is too late. With after school activities, th at would run to 5:30. At our school they currently end the regular day at 2:30 a nd after school at 3:30. How about just pushing back 1 hr instead of 2?

07:14 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

The buses coming early from Elementary, can start the pick-up of high school stu dents at far distance places first and that can be followed for the middle schoo l students also.

07:32 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

That the elementary schools with the earliest start times get a few more buses s o that the bus travel time isn't more than 30 minutes in order to allow their wa keup time to be no earlier than 6:30.

07:40 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Chnaging the 4:30 PM ending time for middle schools

07:57 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

No elementary schools should open earlier than 8:00 am.

08:10 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

High schoolers play sports at school, Middle schoolers play sports in their neig hborhood. Getting home at 5:00 limits ability to have sports practices for Middl e Schoolers. Can Middle Schoolers and High Schooler share the same bus?

08:20 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I would only approve of an elementary schedule which would have school starting later for my child than it does currently. I like the 9:00 am or later schedule, with class ending at 4pm or so. BUT OF COURSE IT NEEDS TWEEKING, to be sure bus es are not caught up in rush hour...Having said that, a very early start schedul e has always been hard on us , as our child's natural body rhythm does not call for him at age 8 to sleep by 7pm, but to get enough sleep we have to put him to bed this early. Furthermore, it does not allow family time or time for him to se e his dad after work and commute- unless we all skimp on sleep...During the time changes, putting our son to sleep at 7 pm is even harder still due to increased light outside. He naturally is inclined to stay awake with the light. All aroun d, if he could have a school work day start as close to 9am as possible (or afte r), it would be better for sleep/school/family- the whole lifestyle/cycle. anks!

08:28 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I can't agree with a schedule that has elementary students starting even later t han current start times

08:33 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle school starts too late and end too late.

08:37 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I think the Middle School schedule would be better for my son going into High Sc hool. The later times would benefit his sleep patterns.

08:46 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

4:30 is very late to get out, as students usually have sports/religious school c ommittments which would be hard to keep

08:49 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I believe 9:20 for middle schools is very late.

08:56 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I am concerned about late dismissals for middle/high school. With homework, spor ts schedules, etc., it just might make bedtimes even later and not solve the pro blem of too little sleep.

08:58 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle school--start and end earlier (keep current schedule)

09:06 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I would like to see the middle school schedule mirror the high school schedule o r beginning between 8:35 - 8:55 and ending 3:15 - 3:45.

09:07 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I would not adjust the middle school times.

09:12 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Put middle schools in the middle slot and high school as the latest to start cla ss

09:15 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle schools start a little earlier if possible to aim at getting out by 4 pm.

09:17 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I think the middle school start time is too late. It should be more in line wit h the high school start times because that is what they will have to get use to.

09:20 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I like the later start for the schools, I still think high school could be a lit tle later and middle school slightly earlier.

09:21 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

The middle school start time is too late.

09:22 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

High School students should start later than Middle School students.

09:24 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Change the Middle Schools starts to an earlier time.

09:24 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Elementary school (especially kids who are bussed to GT Center like Colvin Run E .S. need to start around 8:30 so they don't go to school half-asleep.

09:25 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I think schools should open later in the morning and stay open a little later in the afternoon.

09:26 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

The middle school bell is too late in the morning.

09:38 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle School start and end times too late

09:42 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

In this area, we need more buses because the bus ride is too long, too crowded, and too many stops.

09:48 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

it makes middle schools have to end too late...would impact after-school activit ies and sports scheduling.

09:51 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle school should start earlier but I don't know how you'd do it.

09:52 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Switch middle and high school so that middle schoolers are home first - more lik ely to care for elementary students before and after school.

09:54 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

High School starts 8:00-8:30 Middle schools start 8:00-8:30

09:56 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

The proposed Middle School schedule seems a little late, especially in terms of any after-school activities. Is there any way that buses could be "shared" -- f or example, pick up Middle and High School students at the same time, drop them at one school first and then the other -- so that the two schedules could be mad e more similar? Even if the Middle School schedule can't be adjusted, however, I do like the idea of the older students starting later, and would support that change.

10:01 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

High school should start the latest, not middle school. Biologically, high scho ol students need mor sleep than they currently are getting, and start later in t he morning than younger kids. If we expect as much of our students as we do, we need to best accomodate their natural needs.

10:09 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I think the middle schoolers get out of school too late.

10:11 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

It would improve middle and high school kids' performance, but not necessarily i mprove my 2nd grader's, nor my that of my youngest who will enter kindergarten i n September 09.

10:19 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Start high school not earlier than 9:00 am. Middle school can start at 9:00 also , if it helps to balance the transportation load, or can start earlier, e.g. any time after 8:00 am.

10:31 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

could you switch the start time bwteen middle school and high school - middle sc hool 8:35-8:55 & high school a bit later?

10:32 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Keep the elementary and middle schools with the early times so parents can see t he kids off to school before going to work. The high school students should hav e the latest start times since they can get ready and go to school independent o f their parents. This would also fit their physical needs to sleep later. Curr ently, my husband puts the kids on the school bus at 7:50 am before going to wor k and I leave work to be home when the bus arrives at 3:15 pm. Working parents with young children can manage this schedule without needing child care.

10:47 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle School is getting out too late they have too many activities and homework to get out after 4:00

10:49 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Elem starts by 8:00am

10:51 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Earlier start time for middle schools.

10:52 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle schools would be ending too late....they would not get home until 5:00 or so and this may causes buses to get caught in the rush hour traffic. I am also concerned on how late this will push after school sports and activities. Unfor tunately there are only 24 hours in the day for the kids to fit in school, homew ork, sports, jobs etc....

10:54 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

High school start closer to 8 to allow for after school activities and teams.

10:54 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I think middle schoolers should attend school earlier than proposed above, and e lementary schoolers not the earliest.

10:54 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

for High Schools, I'd prefer a start time between 8:05am and 8:25am (end 2:45 to 3:15)

10:54 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle schools should start earlier - maybe 8:55 - 9:15

10:55 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I want HS to start much later in the AM. As late as possible.

10:56 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Start a little earlier and end a litrle earlier. 4:30 p.m is too late

10:57 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

L Archer ends at 3:55pm/home at 4:30pm--too late for elementary school. This sp ecific school should be changed to earlier time due to small bus loading area. It is 35 minutes from dismissal to home (mile to school). Also, 4th child/son w alks to Flint Hill ES/8:35-3:15--No problem here.

10:59 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I would like to see high schools start later but not as late as 8:55.

11:02 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

The Middle School schedule seem late, but I think that it is better than the cur rent schedule where the bus comes at 6:30

11:04 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I would support having the proposed middle school start for the High schoolers, time between 9:20-9:40 for more sleep time.

12:11 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I think High School should start later than Middle School

12:13 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I still would like High School students to somehow get off earlier than elementa ry students.

02:05 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

sequence the elementary school first, middle school second and high schoolers la stest starting times.

11:04 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Have the middle school start between 9:00 and 9:20.

11:05 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle schools ending at 4-4:30 is too late. Both of my middle schoolers have a 40 - 60 min bus ride.

11:07 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I wonder whether it's better to have the high schools start at 9:20 and the midd le schoolers earlier

11:08 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I would try to have the middle schools start and end a little bit earlier. If sc hool ends at 4:30, then they won't get home until at least 5pm.

11:11 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

School needs to start for all ages before 9, preferably as close to 8:30 as poss ible, to allow people to get to work.

11:18 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle schools should start earlier than high schools.

11:18 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

High school times look ok - between 8 and 9 is good - middle school looks a bit late for start and end times.

11:23 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

All grade levels start 8-8:30am and end 3-3:15pm would be desireable although I am aware the current budgetary constrain and resources do not allow that....

11:23 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

high school 8:30 and middle school 9 to 9:15. middle school ending at 4:30 woul d conflict with afternoon sports programs.

11:26 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Try to get middle schools to start a little earlier. Ending at 4 p.m. or later is too late, given the ridiculous amount of homework that some middle school tea chers assign. A 4:00 p.m. or later end time also makes it difficult for the stud ent to have even one afterschool activity, such as a sport. If such a modificati on requires having more elementary schools start earlier, that would be preferab le. The transport times to middle schools are much greater than to elementary s chools, since the middle schools each seem to draw from several elementary schoo ls and a greater number of middle school students live a significant distance (s everal miles) from the middle schools than do elementary school students.

11:29 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

The middle school schedule seems to be pretty late. The others seem good.

11:31 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

the middle schoolers should start earlier, closer to HS schedule

11:37 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle school needs to start earlier.

11:38 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle school times need to be earlier

11:40 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

who have sports and other activities. think about parents who work with middle schoolers are yo ugoint ot leave them to wait home to catch bus and for those w ho have to walk or ride this seems rather silly. HS should probably start aroun d 8 am and get out by 2:30. I have been through all grades and have given my ch ildren rides in the morning to school because the buses come so early for HS and middle school. ork on the times.

11:40 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

High School starting time should be about 8 AM 30 AM

11:46 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

middle school should start between 8:35-8:55 and high school should start betwee n 9:20-9:40

11:57 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Secondary schools should start middle school & high school at the same time. The later time frame is better for both.

11:59 AM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I would have to figure out my work day start time. Not too much of a problem no w, but could be.

12:03 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Send the high schoolers last. With proper attendance policies that allows the p arents of middle schoolers to safely get their kids off to school with some supe rvision.

12:14 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

The most improvement is the high school times, but the middle schools need a lit tle improveing. That is very late for kids to go in and end the day. Also, the re is still no help with the elementary students if you need the older ones to w atch them.

12:15 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

A 7:50 start time for elementary schools can not impact these children. I am wo rried that elementary schools, would be negatively impacted by the change to mov e the start time for middle and high school students. I support the changes so long as elementary schools are not burdened. 7:10 is too early for elementary s tudents to be standing out at a bus stop. I would not support if this were the change.

12:15 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

It would mean that all of the sports activities would run later and I think they 're already to late into the night.

12:16 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Start high school before 8 a.m. but no earlier 7:30

12:20 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle school starts too late. Can't leave kids at home alone this age if you w ork. HS and ES schedules fine

12:28 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

elementary school start between 7:50 and 8:50 and 8:50

12:29 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Elem student should start between 9:20 and 9:40 while Middle school start time s ame or similar to Highschools

12:31 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle schools start too late in this proposed schedule.

12:32 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

That where possible middle schools start and end a little earlier, but not as ea rly as today. Middle school was the most diffcult time for my daughters to wake up, as she just finshied her junior year, my oldest is finally used to the sche dule, but it is harder in winter when it is so dark in the am.

12:32 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

swap middle school and high school schedules

12:33 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I would like both the middle and high schools to continue to start around the sa me time. So they can take the same bus and be home at the same time. I would im age more families have children at this level going to school consistently toget her over the 6 years.

12:33 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle school ends too late for after school activities.

12:35 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Why does the Middle School start so late? Thought most middle and high schools s hared buses, so they could, in theory, start closer in time. Otherwise, you migh t have idle middle school kids??

12:36 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle schools should start at least 40 min. earlier,so a little more of the aft ernoon would remain after school.

12:36 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

High school should start earlier (ie current schedule) to allow for after school activities to get started earlier and thus end earlier to get the kids home to begin family time/homework/jobs. Later starts for Elem and MS are not affected by this afterschool sports so it's fine for them to start later.

12:42 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle school ending at 4:30 seems very late

12:43 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I would go with the schedule that Loudoun County uses, with high schools startin g last (around 9:00). I would support the change recommended by the Task Force however, as ANYTHING is better than what we now have.

12:44 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle Schools start too late.

12:53 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

middle schools would end too late in this proposal

12:53 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Just starting high school at 8:00 would be later enough. Middle school starting after 9:00 is too late

12:54 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

A start time prior to 8:30 would make it very difficult for students in GT cente r schools as their bus ride would cause their schedule to begin too early in the morning and have a detrimental effect on their sleep. I think travel time need s to be taken into consideration for children bussed to schools outside their im mediate area. For example, my daughter now catches the bus at 8:00 am, and her bus ride is 45 minutes in the morning and afternoon. Any earlier start time for her school would entail a much earlier time to wake up which would not enable h er to get enough sleep to perform well at school.

12:55 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I strongly agree that High School should start later. Elementary children natur ally get up earlier than older children. It makes sense to switch. My improvem ent suggestion would be to start schools in this order: (1) Elementary; (2) Mid dle; and (3) High School.

01:00 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

HS: Start at 9AM, end near 4:30PM

01:01 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

My daughter would like later start with early release so she can still attend he r dance classes at 4 PM.

01:01 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

My daughter would like later start with early release so she can still attend he r dance classes at 4 PM.

01:11 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle School should start earlier; a 9:20 start time is too late;High Schools s hould get out earlier than 3:15 to 3:45 to accomodate after school sports/activi ties

01:14 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I would have elementary starting earliest, followed by middle, then high school.

01:21 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

High schools would start later than middle schools.

01:23 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle school not starting & ending so late!

01:25 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Move the middle shool start back to before 9am and adjust the elementary schools to accomodate (if possible).

01:26 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

the middle school start time is too late.

01:30 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Later arrival for HS and earlier arrival for middle schoool. HS students have h eavy study loads that keep them up late. They also sleeep in later then younger kids

01:31 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I would NOT support this with Middle Schools starting that late. I would rather they have the very early times that the High School does. 9:40 is way to late t o start school and would be a problem for children in extra curricular activitie s. I would rather it stay the same.

01:31 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I prefer a High School start time between 7:45 - 8:15.

01:38 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

For after school sports the earlier high school programs works better.

01:40 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I would flip flop the high school and middle school schedule. High school in th e later slot.

01:43 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Is there any way to get the middle schools on the same time schedule as the high schools? If not, I like the new proposed schedule.

01:46 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

High School start at 8 AM.

01:48 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle school ends too late

01:55 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

8:35 is too late for high schoolers working after school and traffic issues. Put elementary school in at 9:20.

01:59 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

For Middle School should consider looking at some after school programs to see i f can schedule before school because of finishing later in day. For example, so me study groups etc could meet before school started if school didn't start unti l 9:20.

02:04 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle school starts too late.......ends too late. Kids have more homework and other activities than elementary kids.

02:13 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

eliminate the gap between the end of school and the start of practices/extracurr icular activities (at Madison, it's an hour). in theory, the kids could get som e homework done during that time but most don't, choosing instead the "hang out" with their friends.

02:15 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

High school should start later than middle school

02:16 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle school start time is too late. Should be moved up even if HS has to move up 30 minutes.

02:21 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle School to start between 8:30 and 9:00

02:31 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle and High Schools shouldn't start before 7:20 as they do now - recommend t hey start between 7:50 and 8:35 so would end by 3:15 at the latest

02:40 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

1. Starting some elementary schools at 7:50 am would be too early for most kids/ families: it should not be earlier than 8:10 am (which, we believe, is the earli est opening for some elementary schools.) 2. Why should High Schools start befo re Middle Schools? The reverse might fit the teens better.

02:43 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

For my personal family arrangements, it would be good to have high schoolers or middle schoolers available to watch my elementary school children after school.

02:45 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle schools start too late. What would parents do with them until school sta rts in the morning. I do think it's okay for them to end so late in the day, th ough.

03:10 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Be more specific that Secondary Schools (Middle & High) would have the same star t/end time.

03:33 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle school should be home before 4 for afternoon activities.

03:35 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I would suggest to that HS and MS start at the proposed times and that elementar y students start and leave at a later time.

03:41 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

High schools need the latest start times

03:46 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I like this proposal, but I would make middle school the earlier schedule--8:35 end 3:15--and make high school the later schedule. I can see that people who rel y on high school students for child care would prefer the "A" schedule, though, and that schedule may allow for more after school activities and practices which are not part of middle school.

04:05 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

All elementary schools should start between 7:50 and 8:30. Later start times, c ombined with the extremely limited availability for before school SACC, make it impossible for both parents to work full time and still have dinner as a family. lt for both parents to have a career.

04:40 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I like the collaboration day that Oakton used wednesday mornings

04:51 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

The middle school schedule is too late. They won't have time for homework and e xtra-curriculars. Employed High schoolers may not have time to get to work.

04:59 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Current schedule is based on the assumption that one parent stays home. This doe s not meet today's reality. The fact of the matter is that US has one of the lea st number of school hours among the industrial countires, and we need to extend the number of school hours to remedy this situation.

05:09 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Very strange for middle school to start that late - would make sense for MS to e nd around the same time as HS

05:11 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

high school ends earlier

05:21 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Don't know, but the middle school end time seems pretty late when there are non- school related after school activities to get to.

05:27 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

the middle schools range is kind of late it should be different

07:39 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

UNderstanding the dual use bus issue, it'd be best if kids could end their schoo l day by 4:00

08:35 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I believe all children should start between 8:30 & 9:00. They all need their sl eep, no matter what grade and age.

08:38 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I think 7:50 is still too early for elementary students to begin school. My dau ghter has to get to the bus at 7:50 so a 7:50 start time would be too early as g etting to the bus would probably be at 7:20 which would be very early for our fa mily. Getting out of school too late, however, interferes with after school act ivities.

08:39 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle school schedules should be more in sync with the high school schedule. If that is impossible, then I would support the change.

08:41 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I think bus pick-ups before 7am at any age are too early. As a pediatrician, I see way too many kids who don't get enough sleep, and as a working parent, I wou ld like to have as much time with my kids in the morning as possible, so having them leave for school between 8 and 9am and get home later so they have less tim e with a babysitter or child care is much more family-friendly.

09:08 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I suggest another try for the elementary and middle start times. I think 9:20 is too late a start time.

09:16 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Middle school start is too late

09:36 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I would prefer that HS started and ended later than either Middle or Elementary - younger kids need time to play. HS kids just get into trouble when they have too much time on their hands.

09:41 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I'm not sure what I would suggest but for those kids on athletic teams or who ha ve jobs after school, the later start time would add to an already tight schedul e in the afternoon. I'm not sure there is a best solution.

09:51 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Elementary should not start before 9am.

09:51 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

HS 8am Middle 8:30 Elem 9:00am

10:10 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Having high schools start later than middle schools

10:17 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

High Schools still need to start a little later - Middle school times are fine.

11:08 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

High School should start between 9:20 and 9:40, and Middle School should start b etween 8:35 and 8:55. That's how Loudoun County does it, I believe.

11:11 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

start middle school earlier

11:33 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

switch the middle and high school times.

11:39 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Let middle schoolers out no later than 4PM. 4:30 is too late. Some would not g et home until 5:30.

12:44 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Moving start times back just one hour in the morning would be preferrable due to the timing of after-school activities and family dinners, etc.

02:58 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Even later high school start times, if possible. If not, then this is a good imp rovement.

06:05 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

middle school to start a little earlier

06:26 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Middle school by 9am- still too much staggering of times for families who work i n particular. Students need to be later in middle and HS especially.

07:05 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Would like to see all elementary schools starting and ending in the same time fr ame - don't like having 2 different time frames for elementary schools.

07:24 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

I don't think the high school sched needs to start that late. I would recommend a 7:45 or 8:00 start as the latest start time. I am not in favor of the later dismissals for high school students. It will impact sports and work schedules.

07:45 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Please consider the research on cognitive function and sleep. There's great lite rature to support your decision-making process. Also please consider consulting sleep experts who have been trying to apply this research to the school systems, like Dr. Helene Emsellem in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

07:48 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

I think that the middle school should end at 3:15-3:45 and high school end 4-4:3 0

08:03 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

The Middle school schedule needs to be fixed. A start time of 9:40 is unacceptab le -- the latest of 9:00. Most parents in our community are working and can not be with their children for this late a start time to insure they get to school, don't miss the bus, ect. This is just too late. Even though they are middle sc hoolers and you would think they are responsible forget it, our routes are such that either busing or walking is dangerous enough I would not want to leave my child on her own. Totally unfair/illeagle for the county to expect that. There a re at least 5 other large county and schoiol districts in the nation that accomp lish busing, I suggest we take a look at there start times and number of buses. On the flip side -- by the time these kids get out of school, there is no time f or homework -- Will the teachers suppor this? some nights plus some after school activities. They must have break time after school. Is farifax County going to change its standards?

08:07 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

I believe that the start/end times for middle school is too late. The high scho ol schedule is perfect.

08:17 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

I provide childcare for before/after schools and the varied times allow us to pi ck up multiple schools, with all of them getting out at the same time, many befo re/after centers would not able to accommodate many schools and with SACC being full may present problems for parents

08:24 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Not so late for middle school

08:32 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Have middle and high school end times after elementary end times to help accommo date childcare for younger siblings

08:45 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Bus pick-ups at 7:10 are too early for elementry school

08:47 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Middle school needs to start earlier and get out earlier. Getting home that late leaves littles time for school work dinner, family time, baths, etc.....

08:50 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

high school start by 8

08:54 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Middle schools not going so late. They need time for homework and down-time or extra-curriculars in the evening.

09:04 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

How would this ending time affect after school activities for high schools? Rig ht now I know some sports do not end until after 9pm. If starting later would ca use the sports to end later I may not agree with a later start time.

09:07 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Elemantary schools get out too late. With a later dismissal it affects after sch ool activities. Many things start at 4or 4:30 and my children are not able to pa rticipate because they arrive home too late. Later starting activities get them home late and then there is little time to eat, bath do homework and just relax.

09:08 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Starting any school ater 9:00 is not a good idea. I think it is important for a parent to be with the child in the morning before school and I think most paren ts in Fairfax County work outside the home. It is hard to not leave for your wo rk until 9:00am.

09:08 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

High Schools students should have the latest school start time.

09:08 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

I believe high school students should be given the latest start time, as they ha ve the most homework, and probably stay up the latest at night.

09:12 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

I don't like the middle school schedule as it ends too late.

09:17 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

switch proposed times for elementary and middle schools

09:21 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Only move the current schedule back by a half hour

09:21 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Too late for middle school - makes after school activities impossible when combi ned with homework.

12:51 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

i would prefer the high scshool and middle school day to be pushed back a half h our to 45min.

12:52 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

The middle schools should start a bit earlier so that kids can get to after scho ol activities. (I think you could start the Elem Schools at 7:40, to shift ever ybody forward by 10 minutes.)

01:03 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Switch the start times for High Schools and Middle Schools, so that the high sch ools are starting last and getting out last.

09:34 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

There should be more available slots in SACC...there seems to always be a wait l ist. Plus, there should be a "pay as you use" option because many parents TRY t o get out of work early in order to be with kids after school but sometimes are caught at work with no alternative options.

09:35 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

i don't like the idea of middle schoolers start later than elementary schoolers. Maybe they should switch around.

09:37 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

I believe the available data on student performance would indicate a need for a later start for high school students; I would suggest flipping the middle and hi gh school schedules.

09:42 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

As Loudoun does, elementary schools should start first, then MS, then HS last.

09:55 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Middle school start time is too late.

10:03 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Middle school starts too late

10:12 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

End time should be around 4pm.

10:32 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Switch middle school and elementary school because child care (latch key) would have more impact on elementary-aged kids.

10:42 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

High schoolers need to be home before elementary students.

10:46 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Switch the HS and middle school start times.

10:49 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Middle schools starting at 9:40 seems very late. All schools should start betwe en 7:45 and 9:15.

10:49 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Middle school ends a bit late for after school activities.

10:53 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

The middle school start time is too late. I think students should be in school no later than 9:00.

10:53 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Ending school at 4:30 is too late. After school activities/schedules would be a ffected.

11:00 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

It's difficult to get to after school ballgames/practices and travel team fields when the release time is so late.

11:04 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Let the elementary start the earliest. Tiny kids are always up early anyhow.(sav e money in daycare for parents) Let the Middle school kids go second, and high s chool go the very last of all. They are exhausted at 6 am and often come home an d sleep in the afternoon. They often sleep through morning classes. Their biolog ical clocks are built this way.

11:20 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

MIddle schoolers cannot be coming home so late in the afternoon. If they have a fter school activities and outside activities that leaves them no time in the af ternoon to do these things. Why can't you switch the elementary and middle scho ol times? I would rather keep the current schedule than switch to the proposed times.

11:25 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

I support starting even later for the High School students

11:28 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Middle school should start earlier than high school. High school students can d rive to school in the morning so it would be at the tail end of rush hour.

11:30 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

I would start the middle schools earlier.

11:33 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

the later the better for all the kids

11:59 AM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Starting MS betweem 9:20 -9:40 is to late. Students at this age need the adult s upervision in the AM. What about parents who leave for work? bus drivers and supervisors, the current routes are not always the most logical . Currently my Marshall HS bus passes the school to pick up additional students ? The bus routes also needs to be reviewed for no back tracking, which will sav e time and money.

12:01 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Elementary Schools should start between 8:30-9 (ending at 3-3:30) s should start 9:20-9:40 (end 4-4:30)

12:11 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Don't start the elementary schools too late - these children can not be left alo ne at home like older children and for working parents, they must either pay for before care or try to find a job that starts at 10AM - not likely.

12:20 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

A start time of 9:20am for Middle school students is entirely too late and does not keep into consideration that many parents are uncomfortable with leaving a 6 th, 7th and or even an 8th grade aged child at home. The middle school schedule needs to start earlier.

12:49 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

The middle school hours are too late. Students have after school activities and then outside of school activities.

01:43 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

My child is heading into middle school next year and I think a "get out" time of 4-4:30pm is too late. The child still needs to get homework done plus if they are involved in sports it would make it hard to get to practices, etc. Could'nt we start them a little earlier so the end times are more like 3:30-4:00pm at th e latest?

01:56 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

No school should end 4-4:30 pm.

02:00 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Would like to see start time on the HS or Middle School be at 8AM

02:13 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Keep middle school in the middle. Just switch the elementary and high schools. This schedule has start and end times for middle schoool too late.

02:29 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

A school starting 7 AM is never good for any part; Stundents, teachers, parents, siblings etc

02:40 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Start Elementary schools first, Middle schools second and let High schools start last/latest. tently in capital/lower case: .

03:13 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

middle school starts too late with new schedule

03:22 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

I don't have a child in elementary school but is there a way the elementary scho ol students could start a little later as well as the middle and highschoolers?

03:39 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

I don't think elementary schools should start as late as 9:25. My child goes to a school that starts that late. As a result, the neighborhood kids all end up staying up later at night since they have such limited playtime after school by getting off the bus at quarter to five in the afternoon. Such a late day has co mpletely thrown off my child's circadian rhythms. He can't get to sleep at nigh t and he can't get up in the morning. Yet during the summer he goes to sleep a little bit earlier and gets up much more easily a lot earlier. Elementary schoo l kids need play time after school. I would much rather have my 7 year-old stan ding at a bus stop in the dark/early morning light than getting home almost at d ark. However, our school has a GT center, so I have a feeling it won't matter w hat my opinioin is: FCPS will still have the school start too late.

03:48 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Kid's dont like to get up and kid's have a lot of home work and thing's going on afther school that children or sleeping and dont do good in school because ther e sleeping it is goood. The new time is good children will like it more time to sleep.

04:25 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

That middle school starts at the same time as high school. I'm concerned that t oo many middle schoolers will not be adequately supervised at home before school .

04:31 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

high schools start between 7:50-8:20

04:37 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Middle school starts too late with this plan.

04:43 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

4:30 ending time for middle school is too late

04:59 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Middle School start earlier. I don't think a middle school student should be le ft with the responsibility of going to the bus or walking to school after most p arents have already left home for work. I have no problem with middle schoolers and high schoolers being bussed together.

05:05 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

The impact on scheduling after school activities needs to be fully explored befo re I could make a judgement on the proposed changes. I am concerned that there will be a domino effect on extracurricular activities that will keep my high sch ooler and her younger siblings out later on weeknights and more than offset the gains of a later high school start time. I do not want my high schooler partici pating in athletic competitions that run any later than they currently do. She arrived home at 10:30 pm on several occasions this year following weeknight trac k meets, for example. Weeknight varsity basketball games can go almost as late. Anything later than this would have a debilitating effect on the younger child ren in our household.

05:07 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

The compounding problem is the time that the students are picked up by the buw, or is it a shortage of busses. Our pick up time is at 6:15 AM, but it only ta kes about 20 minutes to drive.

05:15 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Middle School ends to late for our current afternoon activities

05:15 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Earlier middle school start; elementary school start between 7:50 and 8:30

05:23 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

High schools should start the latest.

05:32 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Middle school should not start quite so late, but the other changes are great!

05:54 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Ending earlier - sports and other after school activities start between 4:30 & 5 :00

06:00 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Ideally, I'd prefer that NO children have to start school that early. When I was a child, school started at 9am. We need to revert back to a more child-centered era. But I know this will never happen. It's hard enough to get the school boar d to notice that middle and high school students, the stakeholders with the MOST trouble falling asleep at night, need relief. In the best of all worlds, the en tire school transportation system would be reworked so all schools begin later. But it's far from a perfect world. Given the current climate, and that elementar y aged children do typically arise much earlier than their older counterparts, t hen yes, I support earlier start times for elementary school students if that is the ONLY way to allow high schoolers, the most stressed overscheduled bunch in the county, to sleep later in the morning.

06:37 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Starting elementary school even later would be difficult for morning care.

08:15 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Shorten the school day.

08:49 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Middle school should start between 8:30-9:15.

08:50 PM Thursday, June 05, 2008

Find a way to have the middle schools start a by 9:00 am. "three-bell" schedule in the 70s and 80s.
