Fairfax County Spelling Bee – The Basics

The Fairfax County Spelling Bee is sponsored by the Fairfax County Times, in partnership with the Fairfax County Council of PTAs (FCCPTA).

 Who Can Participate

The Fairfax County Spelling Bee is open to students attending schools in Fairfax County only.

 All public, private, parochial and home school associations in Fairfax County are invited to participate, provided they meet registration deadlines and hold their own, local bees to qualify students for the county bee.

 Age and grade restrictions apply. Please see a complete copy of the Bee Rules for specifics.  

Word Lists

When you register with Scripps, you are given an access code to download word lists for use in your school bee. If you don’t have your access code or know how to do this, please contact Scripps directly. Call Corrie Loeffler 513-977-3742 or Cybelle Weeks 513-977-3822. The Fairfax County Spelling Bee does not make word lists available to local schools.

IMPORTANT: Do not distribute the Scripps word lists to the students to study. They are for your Pronouncer and Judges only.

Student Preparation for the Bee

Students can find materials to help them prepare for the bee at www.myspellit.com.

Deadlines

Registration is now closed.

 All school and home school association bees must be held by Feb. 22, 2008. The top two winners of your school bee will be invited to participate in the 2008 Fairfax County Spelling Bee.

 You must report the names and contact information for these two spellers to the Fairfax County Spelling Bee by Feb. 29, 2008, in order to ensure participation in the county bee.

 The Fairfax County Spelling Bee will take place Sunday, March 9, 2008, at 2 PM in the Theater at Lake Braddock Secondary School.

 All participating schools and home school associations are required to provide at least one volunteer to help with this event.
