FCCPTA Special Education Committee Minutes of the October 24, 2007 Meeting In attendance: Margaret Fisher (chair), Joan Rizek, Sandy Phillips, Venus Banta, Jeff Freeman, JoNell Doyle, Louise Keast, Carol Brown, Connie Lorentzen, Katharine Schultz, Susan Capuano, Scott Campbell, Irene Moore, Sheree Brown Kaplan, Elise DeWitt, Stacey Collins, Phyllis Yoshida, Melissa Stoner, Abbie Wilson, Sarah Meiburg, Mary Zempolich, Woldu Fekadu, Nicole Zupan, Lisa Fagan, Karen Downs, Carolyn Edner, Nancy Larson, Michelle Kansky, Mary Nell Clek, Vera Conley, Ann Marie Boyd, Gretchen Ortega Ideas for Being a Special Education PTA Representative: Six presenters shared their ideas, including: Connie Lorentzen, PTA Dos and Don’ts: Connie emphasized the advantages of being a committee chairperson rather than a liaison. She discussed the items on her handout. Irene Moore, Outside resources: Irene works for PEATC and discussed how they approach questions brought by parents. Helpful web sites include: Sheree Brown Kaplan, Using the PTA Newsletter: Sheree has sample articles to share. Newsletter articles must be approved by the PTA president and principal. Let parents know about upcoming workshops, especially ones that are FCPS sponsored events. The national PTA has a listserv for distributing articles. Show parents how special education benefits all children in a school. Carol Brown, Elementary school projects: Carol recommended applying for a budget from the PTA to use for copying, posters or supporting projects. Set up a table at Back To School night to collect parents’ contact information. Point parents with questions in the right direction. Send home information in the Wednesday folders and have parents send in their suggestions to you in the returned folders. Ask parents to pass on the information you distribute to other parents they know, post in church, etc. Use your school’s special education teachers as a resource. Keep a “lessons learned” notebook to pass on to your successor. Sarah Meiburg, Secondary school projects: Build relationships, work with the staff as a team. For inclusive schools week, set up a fair for the teachers, give them food, provide information booths. Arrange a PTSA scholarship for students with IEPs. Do a transition program for parents of rising ninth grade students and/or for the students themselves. Margaret Fisher, FCCPTA special education committee
structure: The eight Cluster groups coordinated by a parent lead work with
ombudsmen and ACSD reps to support each other, network and share resources,
and do outreach to schools that do not yet have special ed PTA reps.
Volunteers needed for next year committee chair and ACSD representative from
the FCCPTA. Listing PTA representatives on our web site: The committee decided by consensus to post the names of each school that has a special education PTA representative. In addition, we will post the name of the representative unless that person opts out. FCCPTA special education on-line calendar: We will stop maintaining our own separate calendar and instead link to The ARC of NOVA calendar. Parents/Principals: United Vision for Success newsletter.
