How To Welcome Diverse Parents to Your PTA

  • What led you to get involved in PTA/school?
  • What did people do (not do) to make you feel welcome?
  • What has your PTA done to connect with parents who are not typically involved?
  • Suggestions for PTAs who wish to reach diverse parents (or parents from your cultural group)

Panelists will share information about education and communication issues relevant for people from their culture.

  • Salma Al-Ashmawi, Multicultural Panelist (Egyptian Heritage), Family and School Partnerships
  • Maria Blaylock, PTA President, London Towne Elementary School
  • Suzanne Webb, PTA President, Pine Spring Elementary School

Following the panelists a facilitated discussion into breakout sessions will occur and conclude with a Q and A session.

The Northern Virginia District Executive Board would like to invite you to attend the 2012 District Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner to be held on May 1, 6—9 p.m. at the Gatehouse Café, Fairfax County Public Schools, 8115 Gatehouse Road, Falls Church, VA 22042

6:15–6:45 p.m.: Registration & Credentials

6:15–7:00 p.m. : Social Reception in the Gatehouse Café

7:00–8:30 p.m.: Awards Program, Guest Speakers, District Business Meeting

Paid Registration due by April 25.

Credentials information is available on District web site. Awards and recognitions will include students, volunteers, and unit awards. District Business Meeting will include 2012-14 District Officer Elections, 2012-13 Other Income Budget adoption, District Bylaws revisions adoption, draft 2012 Bylaws, Final Report on 2012 General Assembly Actions, and the 2013 Proposed Preliminary Legislation Program (PPLPs) presentation.  (See below.)
