J-O-N-Q-U-I-L for the win!

Congratulations to McNair Elementary PTA’sAkshita B, winner of the 13thAnnual Fairfax County Spelling Bee. Sixth-grader Akshita correctly spelled “jonquil” to capture first place in the Bee, and will now advance to the Scripps National Spelling Beeat National Harbor during the last week in May.

Thank you to the thousands of students who prepared and participated in nearly 80 spelling bees throughout Fairfax County and Alexandria City, as well as the families who supported them!

First Runner Up is Pinnacle Academyeighth grader Fetin H.

Second Runner Up is a four-way tie:

Willem H., Glasgow Middle School

Caroline X., Cooper Middle School

The Spelling Bee started with 73 contestants on stage and stretched through 14 rounds.

Thank you to Pronouncer Blake Giddens, who has served as pronouncer of the Spelling Bee since 2007. Mr. Giddens was the 1983 Scripps National Spelling Bee Champion.
